Default Canon Axx Series cameras, slow focus?

I have used a few Canon A series cameras (A60, A70) and also an older model I don't recall. I have noticed that they can take quite a bit of time to auto focus, set exposure, etc. Many times I have missed pictures while the camera was futzing around trying to setup. My question would be two fold:

- Is this normal on this type of compact, point and shoot camera?
- How are people working around it if it is status quo?

Thanks for any help.

It seems to be the common problem for cameras with passive autofocus. If you want a fast compact point&shoot camera, try one with a fixed-focus lens, like http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_.../exs3_pg4.html
