Default S50 Quick Snaps possible??

I admit to being a mediocre photographer and would like to get better so the S50 was suggested to me, however I'm wondering if it may be a bit to complicated to be a simple point and shoot. In Auto mode, my pictures are usually out of focus and sometimes too bright or too dark. There are lots of settings and that will be great when I want to carefully take a pipcture, but for a quick snapshot I must be doing something wrong because the pictures are still lousy. Is this the nature of the beast in auto mode for this or any digital camera? I don't remember ahving this problem with my Minolta F100, it seems as though I was able to quickly capture something in auto mode and it would come out significantly beeter than I have created with this S50.

Any help would be appreciated.
