Default S400 - Issues opening .avi file in Premiere

If I try to open or import an .avi file that was taken on my S400, I get the message:

"Unable to open that file. File uses an unsupported compression format."

Basically what I am trying to do is brighten up the video because it was taken inside a nightclub. Can anyone give me any tips to brighten up the video without using Premiere or any fixes for this?

I second Virtual Dub. It's free and you can not only save an AVI with a differnt compression format that will work with most anything, but you can GREATLY improve medioocre videos by using the filters. The free plugin filters are the best. Hue/saturation/intensity, color balance, contrast/brightnes, etc etc. Without it my videos would be from decent to useless.

To select a different codec, load the video in VD and go to "video" and "compression" and select a codec. Of course it will only show the codecs your machine already has. So you may have to download some codecs. The one i use that is most compatable with a wide variety of programs and computers is the "microsoft mpeg 4 V2" codec. If it doesn't show that one you might wanna find it and download it.

In any case, heres the VD site... http://www.virtualdub.org/
