Default a300 vs ixus i/sd10

First post here, so sorry if anyone's covered this before.

I'm about to buy my first digital cam, and the price/feature ratio is obviously important.

I've been using Canons for years, so the brand is already settled.

First, I looked at the much-hyped Ixus i (or SD10 in the US), and figured that it'll suit my needs (for now). Then I discovered the 3.2 MP a300. I did a side-by-side comparison at dpreview.com and now I'm really puzzled. Besides the MP difference, what exactly are the benefits of going with the Ixus?

I should probably mention that the "hipness factor" does not really matter to me.

Does looks and size really double the price?
