Default New SX20 IS Picture Quality

I just purchased a Canon SX 20 IS. Having taken some portraits with it I find that the pictures are very soft.

Color is good but it is really lacking sharpness.

Is this typical? Is there any way in the camera to fix this?

I have Canon G12, and I noticed the images are a little softer than my previous Panasonic. After talking with others, seems Canon prefers to render their images a little on the soft side; reasoning sharpness may be added easier than taken away.

If the SX20 menu is anything like mine, there is a section called "MY Colors". In this is a custom setup where you can adjust Sharpness, Contrast, Color, and even accentuate Red, Green, Blue, singularly; or all together.
