Default Timelapse photos on PowerShot cameras

I'm curious if anybody knows any background on Canon's position about timelapse (intervalometer) capabilities on the PowerShot cameras? My old S2 IS has that capability built into the software; it works quite well. But my later SX1 IS doesn't have it. Why?

Anybody know any work-arounds for doing timelapse with cameras that don't have the intervalometer function as part of their software?
