Default Help please with repair!

Hello all, I have a Canon EOS Rebel XS. I've had about 3+ years (no waranty). Earlier this summer we got caught in a thunderstorm while hiking. For about 2-1/2 hours it poured on us. I tried to keep the cam. dry but we go drenched. After we got back to the car the cam won't take pictures. I removed the battery for a day. We were able to download the pics from the hike but other than that it is dead. I tried the box-o-rice trick but it is still dead. I live in a small town with no camera shop so I will need to send it off for repair.
I tried going thru Canon, they have a set price to repair your camera, unless it costs more. There was not even a way to describe what happened to it. If it is fried they will replace it with a rebuilt camera of the same type. Who can I trust to repair my camera? Has anyone out there had similar issues with their cameras? What did you do? Thanks for your help.

Much would depend on the quoted price of the repair- which quite often after postage charges etc might be considered an "un-economical repair".
Maybe consider purchasing a good used body or a refurb..?
