Default T3I scene selection knob

Has anyone had problems with the scene selection knob not functioning an longer on a canon model? I've had old 35mm cameras where the shutter/iso knob would skip. Is this prevalent on these newer cameras? Is there supposed to be a little clockwise/counterclockwise play (very slight)in the knob in between the stops(scene selections) before they hit each detente? For example if my knob is set on portrait, you can feel a little tiny bit of clockwise or counterclockwise play before it turns to the next mode. I felt these on the two floor models as well.
