Default walk-around lens........need advice !!!!!!

Does anyone have a comparison between the
Canon 28-105 (3.5-4.5)II USM & the Sigma 28-105 (2.8-4.0)
both are very close in price ???
It will be used on the Digital Rebel. is it better to go with the Sigma for the better aperature or the Canon ?????
which lens gives sharper pictures ???
tried the 28-135 IS lens love it but to big for the wife to carry around the 28-105 range seem to be the sweet spot in terms of price and lens weight and focal range.......thanks....shkj

Something else to consider is that the Canon lens has USM, which means that it focus fast and silently. The Sigma doesn't have that.

My favorite site for lens reviews seems to be down, so I can't help you on which is sharper.
