From what I read the Canon A60 is physically identical to the A70 apart from a few technical items like:
A70 - 3.2 megapixel (A60 2 MP), 640x480 video and a little more zoom.
Canon have a firmware upgrade for the A70 so what I was wondering is whether one could upgrade an A60 to an A70 with this A70 firmware. Maybe all the physical specs are the same (I figure it would possibly be cheaper to make them this way) and the software is just customised!!

Absolutely not. The differences are physical, so the CCD would need to be replaced, etc. The CCD is a physical unit, and all of the effective pixels are being used. The A70 actually has a larger/higher density imager.
