Default Cant find Canon S-30, software or USB problem?

I recently purchased a Canon S-30 and connected it to my computer and everything was fine. The other day went to download some pictures and the Canon software could not find the camera. Put in new fully charged battery, changed USB port, disconnected all other USB devices: did not help. The camera does turn-on automatically and showup as a system device when it is plugged into the computer(via USB cable)

I had installed Ulead photo express 3.0 in between the time of the camera last working and not working. Uninstalled it and reinstalled canon software, no camera found by the software.

Uninstalled all the software, deleted old files and registry entries, and reinstalled. no luck. called Canon and went thru everything several times. Their dianostics is that my USB ports are not putting out enough power. However all my other USB devices work fine.

It appears that communications is dependent on another microsoft program called STIMON.EXE

Has anyone had similar problems and found a solution
