Default Sport Pics with Canon PowerShot G2

Hi to everyone,

I need a little help about PowerShot G2. First of all I'm a neophite about digital photography and, hoping to became a liitle bit expert in a little while, I'm using the camera in the "Auto" mode. But not always pics I take are ok. Now I have a little "big" problem I need to resolve immediately. As I am a manager of a no-pro volleyball team I need to take pictures to give them (in a digital format) to local magazines and newspaper. I'll take them in the MORNING inside the gymaniusm, with light coming from outside only (no inside light switched on).

I'll take the pics with the athletes having a board with the sponsor logos on their back. So I need to take high definition pics of them and the logos. And the pics must be clear to be used by press.

So can you please tell me the basic settings for my camera, the format it's better for me to use (S, M, LM, L), the definition (Normal, Fine Superfine), the distance from athletes? Do I need to use zoom or not?

I will stand in front of the athletes and, if needed, I can use the 420EX Speedlite flash. But it won't be dark at all.

Second question. At the same I need to take a team (group) pic. So I'll be a little bit far from them (in a wide space in the middle of the gym court) so this time the pic may come dark if I'll will use the camera flash only and the auto settings.

These are my great problems at this time. I hope I was able to explain myself completely.

Please answer me soon. All suggestions will be well accepted.

Thanks in advance.
