I bought an S500 earlier this month and it prompts for date/time whenever I turn it on. It appears that the built-in battery is not charging/holding a charge. Any option short of returning it? Manuals don't seem to discuss replacement options for that battery.

Be sure you've removed the plastic tab from the secondary battery. There's the primary battery you replace or recharge - but there's also a second battery in most Canon cameras - a silver or mercury button cell that lets the camera retain the date and image count, among other things.

And yes, if bought a second hand camera, that cell does die and need replacing after a few years.
