Default A question about night shots with the A40

I have a Canon A40, and I am just starting to learn how to take night shots with it. I am new to this. I set my shutter speed up to about 10 seconds, and I have the camera on a tripid. I am taking simple pictures of houses across the street from my, just to learn. The pictures come out pretty good, but it's hit and miss with the focus. What method should a person use to properly set the focus in night shots. Also, what other settings should be changed for night shots, besides the shutter speed? Thanks for the help.
