Default Sports Photography on The CANON D60

I do a small bit of freelance sports photography. I normally use 1600/800 films for my shots. I have a slow lens 75-300 4.5/5.6 and 150-500 5.6/6.5. I really can't affrod any faster/better lens at the moment. I get good photos most of the time. However, under flood lights and in extremely dull conditions I struggle to keep the min 250th required to freeze the rugby football shots I want to cover.

I have read in a review that the Canon D60 has a max "film speed" of 1000ISO. Does this mean I will struggle even more than with my current 1600 film. What will the quality of my photos be like if I underexpose by 2 or 3 stops. Has anybody run in to similiar problems.

Any advice on the subject would be greatly appreciated.
Thanking you in advance,
