I use my IXUS 50/SD-300(?) alot for taping videos. But the files are so big on the harddisk, so I'd like to re-encode them making the files smaller. Does anyone have a guide on how to do this?

If you do a search on the internet for DivX, you should fine their site. However I believe they don't make video editing software just the codec for DivX. you'll need a basic video editing package like Pinnacle Studio 9 to actually bring in your video and then output it with the DivX codec to a new file.

You need something to encode divx. This usually means that you need some video editing program of some sort (or at least a program that encodes to divx).

Another thing you need to make sure is that the viewer can play divx. For example, if you want to play on a DVD player, you need to make sure that it can play it...
