We have a Canon s400 that has worked fine for over a year now.¬* However, just recently, the photo mode stopped working correctly.¬* Movie mode works fine, with no problems in the picture quality. The pictures look as if they are interlaced, with horizontal lines across the entire pic.¬* The camera has not been dropped or damaged in any way.¬* We're not getting any errors (like E18), but we have had a memory card go "bad" in this camera.¬* The problem still occurs when using the original bundled CF card from Canon. We've tried:¬*¬* ¬*- new battery¬*¬* ¬*- several different CF cards¬*¬* ¬*- new 2.0 firmware updateAnyone know what the problem may be?¬* I thought a firmware update might fix it, but it seems like a processor and/or JPEG encoder problem to me.¬* I have included a pic here that is unaltered, except for size.Thanks.

Wow, never seen anything like that before. I'm no expert but it appears your camera's lifespan is coming to an end. Like all electronic goods, it's hard to predict how long they will last. FWIW, my S400 is about as old as yours and it still does the job for me. May I ask, what memory card do you use? From what I've heard, sandisk ultra series cards never have any conflict with Canon cameras.

You could try to have it repaired I suppose but do you really think it's worth spending $150 or more to repair a camera that's over a year old? If you really like the S400, maybe you should try finding one on Ebay as there are great deals selling for anywhere from $150-$300.

Sorry I couldn't be more of a help; perhaps others can offer a better advice.

You might try taking the battery out for a couple of days and see if it resets itself. I don't hold out much hope for that, but you might as well try everything.

Howzit. I had the same thing happen (striping on my images) to my S230 about 2 weeks after I bought it (3 years ago now). The camera eventually failed entirely (the inner lense cover under the lense stayed closed). I sent it back to Canon (it was still under warrenty) and they sent me a new one that's worked since then.

It sounds like you got a rare lemon. I hope you have warrenty extension coverage through your credit card (my Amex Blue card has it).
