Camera is about 2 yrs old, give or take. Any thoughts as to why the lens won't automatically retract? I have put new batteries in. Thanks

I just logged in to update my own experience with this and posted on another similar topic when I noticed your post. Do you have the E-18 error message also?

Likely what you have is a manufacturers defect , for lack of a better term. If you type in canon lens failure or canon e-18 in yahoo or google, you will find tons on this widespread problem. I have even seen a site on class action, against canon for sticking customers with the high costs of repairs. Problem is that costs are far more than the camera is actually worth.

I have been told by several camera stores and big box store camera dept reps, that this is an "A-series" problem.

I would contact canon asap and see if you might have better luck than I did in my area. Maybe point outto themthat this is a widespread problem posted all over internet and recognized by all reps but canon.

Hopefully your problem is something simple and not the dreaded e18.Check the websites out there that deal specifically with this problem, (yes there are websites onmalfuncitioning canon camera lens) with a lot of unhappy customers but some good tips and confirmation at thevery least.

Hope this helps.
