I was able to visit a free-flight facility for butterflies and while they were much too fast to catch in flight I've got some shots where they sit at feeders.

The light was only so-so and I found, that rising ISO wasn't worth it because of the loss in image quality. Taken with Pentax DL2 and different manual lenses.

Regards,
Th.

Update: here are some more images from this series.

#4 - blue one. Now that was tricky. He used to "open" the wings only for a very short time, so I went for ISO800 and 1/320s and had to use a very small f-stop to achieve that speed. 1/200s and a tad faster were blurred. That one has small DOF, but at least doesn't suffer from motion blur.

#6 - sometimes it really looked more golden than anything else. Unfortunately I have quite some grain in that shot and for some reason NR didn't work very well.

#8 - I was puzzled at the smooth colors here, all other butterflies had way more "structure"

#10 - looks a bit as if it had fur around the body, doesn't it? Last image for the 1st update - I hope you enjoyed the show.
