Thank you, Hards80, was just preparing for a larger version, wonder if the picture quality is enough

Hards80,

Want to improve my close up skills. What do you think of the new Canon 100 L IS Macro? Don't really like too shallow DOF. Want the background to be recogniceable at least

Shoturtle,

As far as I can see it's 154 mm with the 450D. Must have been the very useful and affordable consumer kit tele zoom lens EF-S 55-250 mm. Thank you.

I might get that lens, It's got excellent reviews for many different purposes. But I'm afraid that I can't get enough DOF of field at higher magnifications. Don't know really, I have preferred quality point and shhots for thes kind of motives and Im not sure I can make better results with the 100 IS

The 100 L IS is a very great lens optically. If you don't want super shallow DoF, just stop down until you get the DoF you want.

Torgny,

Very nice results with the EF-s lens.

If you want to get a good canon macro lens, the EF 100mm 2.8 macro is not a bad option at 1/2 the price of the L. Even though it is discontinue, you will be able to find them new. I recently got this lens. This link have some of my first test shots at different aperture.
