Default Displaying Jewelry

The point of this post is not the photos but rather the unusual jewelry display technique of a vendor at the local farmer's market. This vendor placed the display items in pans of rice. I thought it was to provide contrast between the silver of the jewelry and the trays or to keep the jewelry in position. The vendor said however that it was to reduce the moisture left over from people handling the jewelry and thereby reduce tarnishing.

Interesting. The first on in particular reminds me of sushi.

I dont think its the water so much from people touching them, it would be the acidic oils. And rice wont absorb the oils. But its a good conversation piece.

I had doubts about effectiveness also as sulfur compounds are the principle tarnishing agents of silver (forming silver sulfides) but I wasn't going argue chemistry while photographing her display.

I think it would be neat to replace all those grains of rice with fly maggots. It would all look the same but alive and moving.

Bynx:

Suspect the health department might object to that display method at a farmer's market, not to mention the food vendors.
