i like the first one. the looser crop gives the flower room to "breath" so to speak. the 2nd feels cramped in there.

Dustin,

I can make the square 700*700 picture elements. I'm struggling with a macro lens. It's got IS but it doesn't help much

Thanks for your interest

i always use a tripod for a macro shot. the IS is really only useful for using the macro lens as a medium tele. for macro shots, you really need to work slow with a tripod.

Yes, Quality compacts are much easier. I always walk with a camera in my hand. No place for tripods. Had a Canon G9 but it died a violent death a couple of weeks ago. Never really liked the idea of dedicated macro lenses but it's got other good properties

I like the original crop the best. Do you have an external flash. If you do, try this: Manual mode aperture set to F16; Shutter 1/200 or fastest sync speed of your camera; iso 100 or lowest of your camera. If you don't want to shoot with a tripod, using the flash can really make a difference with Macro shooting.

Bob,

I'm always unsure how to crop my pictures. Can see hundreds of possiblities. Thanks - I'll continue to struggle with the 100 macro lense. I had hoped for more cooperability

I'll try to outwit it. It's not my friend yet. At the moment any compact seems to smile at me Your pictures are very inspiring, though
