Chris, When I shoot to achieve a good "DOF" shot I try to do two things, The first is make sure one part of the pic is crystal clear (dosent matter if it is in the fore front or back of the pic either will do) But the other must have a unique quality also in the blurr, I generally do this with lighting, to get a texture or color to pop out I have enclosed an example..
