I received an Epson 340 printer for Christmas that I thought I'd use as a photo printer. However, since I don't need another full-size printer, would the EpsonPictureMate produce better quality and longer-lasting pictures than this conventional 6-color printer or would I only be trading for size and convenience? In other words, is the PictureMate's claim for 100-200 year picture permanence only because of its prepackaged high-quality paper and ink, or will the 340 do the same thing if I use quality paper while also serving as a backup printer?

The 340 is not a laser printer, you posted in the wrong area. However,to answer your question, yes the paper and inks used make a big difference in life of the prints. The R340 is a dye based printer. It might be rated at about 40 years with Epson ink ank the right paper. That is indoors under glass and not in direct sunlight.
