I know Photoshop is popular, but there is a program called The Gimp that is free from http://www.gimp.org/and has most of the features of Photoshop. The interface is a bit odd at times but one can't complain too much when there's no cost.

Anyway, I'm learning how to use it and made some pics:

Here's me with birthday cake on my face, blended into a picture of the Pope (my apologies to anyone this may offend!)



And some others I've used as signatures in forums (only the images of me are mine, the others I've plundered off the Internet...)

I'm a Linux guy and I use the Gimp exclusively. I too have found it's interface a bit odd, but I've never used Photoshop. Version 2 is said to be closer to Photoshop's interface, and I like it fine. The Gimp has every tool I've ever needed.
