Default layer masks....

I am currently working through "Sam's photoshop in 24 hours"...hehe....which has so far taken me a month...hehe

In any case, I have arived at masking.
I have learnt to create quick masks and can edit photoes using this.

I have also learned to create layer masks and can edit the layer masks too....BUT.

I have no idea how to edit the photo with the layer mask.
I have tried everything...linking the layer mask to another layer, or just editing on the layer mask....but I either get an error message telling me that nothing is selected, or the whole photo is altered if I apply a filter.

What have I mis-understood?
How do I make the layer mask active?

Photoshop has a lot of techniques for the same job. This is mine for doing that layer-mask job.

When the shot is opened. the background is active by default.

make background active
make your selection
alt-c
alt-v
you now have one layers
click it to make it active (blue)
now you can adjust the mask as you like.

hmmm..... still confused.....

alt-v makes the view menu drop down....and I am not sure what alt-c does.

What I have found out now is that I can draw on the image after making a layer mask but not use the filters. Is that right?

Is it not posible to apply filters to layers with layer masks? As in selecting the area to use the filter on.....

Okay listen up.

Hvis du hellere vil have det på dansk skal du skrive til mig privat eller PM.

When the shot is opened. the background is active by default.

make sure the background is active by clicking it!
make your selection with i.e the lasso tool or one of the others
ctrl-c (hold the keys down at the same time to copy your selection)
ctrl-v (hold the keys down at the same time to insert your select automatically in a new layer - dont make one yourself!)
you now have one layer and the background
click the layer to make it active (it turns blue)

Now you can do just what you like! filters, brightness, sharpness, whatever.

Var det bedre ?

now you can adjust the mask as you like.
