Default What Software?

Are there any free photo editing programs that are worth getting or would it be better to purchase one? If so, what does anyone suggest?

Try Gimp, Picasa, Photoscape. All free. Gimp is quite comprehensive. If you've ever used Photoshop or Paintshop Pro, Gimp will take a little getting-used-to.

I'm new to phototgraphy. So, I have never used anything. I was just wondering what a good program is and what everyone is using.

So, do you think Gimp is the best free program out there and I can get away with using it over Photoshop? I'm just a newbie at photography so I want to get good results but don't need professional results. Mostly just pictures of my kids and my dog.

Thanks for your help.

Gimp is the best free software out there, but its a complex program. You can begin with Picasa and Irfanview. Once you feel yourself comfortable you can upgrade to Photoshop Elements 8, that you can get for $50 in Ebay, a great value for the money.

Then, go with Picasa. Later on down the line you can reassess your needs.

First question would be "What do you want to do to your photos?". If it is just basic cropping, and adjusting color/contrast/brightness, then any of the free programs will work. Irfanview has the ability to use Photoshop plugins, giving a little more creativity.
