Default Help with an overexposed background please

I took some pictures today - the type I can't take again for years because the people won't be in the same location again. The foreground came out fine. I used my flash on my FZ35 to diffuse the bright sunlight but still the background is very overexposed. To make it worse its not the sky.. its sunlight falling on plants which are bright and the people are in the shadow of a tree.

Any suggestions as to how I can fix these pictures?

Software I own:

Adobe Photoshop CS 2
Adobe Lightroom 3.2

Thank you.
