using the lasso tool, capture the whites of the eyes and put them on their own layer. Once you have them on their own layer, open the image adjustment for adjust color, adjust hue/saturation, and slide the lightness slider to the right to lighten just the selected area. When done, you can flatten the layers

Depending on the amount of red, you may be able to use the dodge tool as well to lighten. I've had luck removing redness in eye's due to lack of sleep.

Not to go against what ohenry said but, once I opened the color adjustment > Hue/saturation dialog box I would change the pull down color to red instead of using master and, decrease the saturatioin there and then, change back to master to lighten them up a little. I suppose it's all a matter of what works best for you but, I personally like the results I achive this way.

One thing that I have found using photoshop is that there are MANY ways to achieve the same thing. There is no right or wrong way, only the way we prefer

Well, thanks everyone for the tips. I'm a busy stay at home mom, so I am going to see what works best when I get a free moment... Like that almost ever happens. Thanks again!
