Default Black and white to color

How can I convert old black and white pics to color. Is there a way to do it in Photoshop or is there another program out there that can assist in accomplishing this.

There's no way to reconstruct data that isn't there. You would have to colorize it with paint tools and such. Similar to what Ted Turner Classic Movies did to old B&W films.

Here's how I do it in photoshop

1.Scan it in grayscale
2. do any touching-up of cratches and such
3. convert it to RGB.
4. Make a selection around a part you want to colorize (selection doesn't need to be perfect)
5. add a hue/saturation layer (Layer > new adjustment layer > hue/saturation)
6. In the dialog box, check the "colorize" box on the bottom right
7. Move the hue (and maybe saturation and brightness) slider until you get the color you want, then click OK
8. Now select the brush tool and select the layer mask for your new layer
9. Paint black for areas you don't want to colorize and white for areas you do.
10. Repeat steps 4 - 9 for every color you want to add to the picture
Hope this helps - have fun!

You may want a color picture up next to your b&w so that you can 'steal' colors from the color picture to paint into you b&w.

Thanks for the replys. LTBerry, I've played around a little using a method similar to what you suggest. The results have been good. Effen, I'll try using a color pic next to what I'm doing to see if I can get better skin tones. Thats the one thing I haven't found a good color combo for.
