Is there a way to convert an image to a line art/coloring book page with photoshop or Elements? I've tried the Find Edges and Desaturate but it leaves most images either too blank or the exact opposite.

Thanks for any help.

Try Filter>Blur>Smart Blur, set the 'Mode' to 'Edge only' and play with the settings to get the best result, then Image>Adjustments>Invert. It will depend on the subject, but you will still have some erasing and editing to do.

There are some tools for making a sketch from an image in PS.

I like Corel Painter 8. It does an excellent job of making a sketch, so you can use it as the basis for artwork -- painting, gouache, etc.

Cheers,

Here is a site that sells a program especially for this purpose:
http://www.kidware.net

They have a program that converts your personal photos into coloring book pages that you can print and color. Not sure if it is better than photo shops edge detection filter but seems to do what you want.
