There are some great tutorials online for Photoshop. Here is a basic layers tutorial on a site that has thousands of good tutorials" http://www.good-tutorials.com/track/912

Google found about 71000 beginner tutorials with layers: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...utorial+layers

I like tutorials better than books because they can spend more space and have better illustrations taking you through each step.

You might consider this free course: http://graphicssoft.about.com/c/ec/1.htm

Check the tutorials pulldown menu.

I still have a dent in my forehead from banging it on the corner of my desk while figuring out layers. A very powerfull tool so the dent is worthwhile.

Keep looking at the tutorials/books, one of these days the penny will drop.

I thought I was the only Photoshop user in danger of going permanently nuts trying to figure out layers!

And then I discovered Katrin Eismann's new book "Photoshop Masking and Compositing." Words cannot describe how terrific this book is; 519 pages on just compositing and masking with layers being a central facilitating topic for all of it. She breaks down her instruction into simple steps and actually shows what is going on for each step with fully illustrated instruction; the best I have ever seen for Photoshop. Plus, she shows how layers are actually used to accomplish image work and how they interact with all the other factors possible and always within the context of achieving something specific with a specific meaningful demonstration image. I am now using most of my expensive stack of other Photoshop books as paperweights.

Hope this helps.
