Has anyone notice with either of these programs and I assume others in this class saved files are larger then the original ?Importing an image and then simply saving it wihout any editing almost doubles the size of the file .... what is all this extra information ? Files were save in their original format (jpeg) :?

No extra information.. JPEG is a variable compression algorithm. You can trade detail for compression.

The pictures from your camera are being saved in a lower compression than the default settings for Ulead/PSP. When you do a save as... (In Ulead) you can select the compression and that will be the default from now on. You can also go into the advanced preferences and set the mode to always ask.

Extra information is saved if you do it in the native format (PSP for Photoshop, UFO for Ulead) this saves the image uncompressed and with layers.

You shouldn't save an image you worked on from any of them in JPG. Your original image had artifacts from the JPG compression that you enhance every time you save again as JPG. Your best bet is TIFF or the native format of the editor. If you must save in JPG do it at the best quality your program will give you. It will be larger than the original because it isn't compressing it as much and therefore not adding as many compression artifacts.
