Hi all,

All my photos were originally stored on my laptop before I transferred them to my newly bought external USB hard drive. The hard drive crashed and all my photos are gone. Technicians say the drive is physically damaged and cannot even be detected, so any info on there is impossible to recover.

I think my only chance is to use a Data Recovery Program to recover any photos that I once had on my laptop. I only transferred all my photos over to the new hard drive a couple days ago so I hope I still have a good chance of recovery.

After going through the forums in search of a good program, I tried PC Inspector with some luck. I then tried Easy Recovery Professional and was able to retrieve a more using the RawRecovery option. In total, I'm guessing I was able to fully recover around 1/3 of my photos, if not more.

The other 2/3 of my photos are still JPGs but are not viewable. No thumbnail preview comes up and when I do a full view, a message will come up saying "No Data".

However, when I check the JPG file itself, it still says it's resolution is 3008 x 2000 and the file size is anywhere between 2-3 megs like it normally is. So, I believe there is still information there but the JPG is corrupted or else missing it's JPG header, etc.

If anybody has any idea what could be wrong or know a good program (free or otherwise) that can recover JPGs well or repair corrupted JPGs, I would greatly appreciate it.

If you want, I can even email you a corrupted JPG to see if you have any better luck than I did.

Hope to hear from anybody soon,

Chris

I've had some luck with zero assumption but I'm not sure it will find more than the other programs you've tried.

maybe you could post one of the damaged files somewhere? I can then download it and see what I can use on it.

Hi,

I posted 2 valid JPGs and 3 different corrupted JPGs on my website. I included 2 good ones because one is portrait and the other is landscape. As for the corrupt JPGs, I don't remember which way they were shot. They are all still in its original resolution of 3008 x 2000 so, I didn't want to embed them into this message in case its too big to view.

You'll need to right-click and use "Save target as" in IE (or equivalent in other browsers).

If you have problems downloading them, please let me know.

Also, I came across a website that says they can view corruptable JPGs.

~~~~~
now i know how to get the Images back:
download Irfanview (you should already have this freeware!) (http://www.irfanview.com / irfanview.net)
choose the "corrupted" images in the filebrowser and go to
File - JPG Lossless Operations - Lossless transformations with selected Thumbs...
then only choose: transformation: none, optimize JPG file, save with original date/time andKeep all APP markers.
After that the files do work again!
I tried this and wasn't successful. Do you also want to give this a try?
Thanks for your help and I look forward to your reply,
Chris
irfanview does not exist on my platform (OSX).
If I open the file in a hex editor, I can see that at least the header info of the file is missing, including the EXIF data. I even used a command line unix tool called jhead to Attempt to work with the header info, but too much is gone. In the beginning of the file data, there should be something that tells the computer that this file is a jpeg and it should have some other properties like file size, etc that are necessary for software to know what kind of file it is.
I'll keep poking away at it, but it doesn't look good.
Each of your files will probably be damaged differently. I'd suggest trying the different recovery methods on each file. You may get a few more back.
Just wondering if you ever resolved the issue with your jpeg files ? I recovered some from my system and no matter what I do it says the header is bad, I looked at them with a hex editor and the header is not there. Have no idea how or if I can rebuild the header. Let me know if you get a chance.
Thanks
If only the header information is messed up, you can try replacing it using a Hex editor. The hard part is finding out where the header ends and the file begins. If you used the same camera to take all the photos, then the files should all have about the same header information. Just find one file that works and experiment on one of your corrupted files.
Good Luck!
