I am currently using corel draw/photo paint 9, Photoshop Elements 1.0, and s7raw (freeware Fuji S5100 raw converter).

I would like to be able to use 16-bit color depth but was wondering if GIMP offers it so that I won't have to buy CS2 (which I cannot afford) or PE3 (Which I can).

Also aside from 16-bit color depth how does GIMP compare to the Adobe software? Will it provide results that are comprable? Is it as easy to use as PSE1? Does it work with Fuji S5100 raw files? How does it do with memory management? Etc...

I tried it briefly but hated every second of using it.

Another good app that can properly handle 16bit images is Picture Window Pro. It's not the 800lb gorilla that Photoshop is, but all of the tools are aimed at photographic adjustments and I think it's still < $100. Norman Koren loves it www.normankoren.com
