Ok, I am just starting to learn how to use photoshop. I have not taken any class yet and I am pretty much training myself how to use it just by playing around with it. I know the best way is to take classes but I dont have that kind of money. My next idea would be to buy books and search online on how to become a good photoshopper. I want to be somewhat a pro at it or atleast close to it.

The only PS program that I have is adobe PS 7.0 which I obtain from a friend of mine. I know this is kinda of outdated program but this is all that I have to work with.

My question is, can I learn with this version or should I cough up the $$$ and buy the PS CS/2?

Will most of the stuff that I learn on 7.0 be able to transfer over to CS/2? Also I notice their are different versions of PS like PS Element which is something that I can afford, but I see that PS element is cheaper then 7.0 so is that a stripped version of it?

I want to learn everything that I can without taking a class on it. Can someone link me to a good website where you can learn PS for free and any books that I can buy.

Thank you in advance.

You can learn quite a bit about PS7 as a beginner from http://www.trainingtools.com/online/photoshop7/main.htm and http://www.computer-darkroom.com/ .

With PS7 you have an outstanding tool ... IMHO CS2 is better, but 7 is just fine. As for a book, Adobe's "Classroom in a Book" series is good. I teach with the version for CS2, but the PS7 one would be best for you since you have 7. What you learn will easily transition to CS2 should youdecide to purchase the upgrade.

Good Post.

There certainly are changes, but the way the programs work, and the arrangements of tools remain the same. Personallly, I prefer CS to CS2...

The HP Learning Center is starting a free online Photoshop CS beginner's course next month. I would think you could do everything or almost everything in the course with version 7.

Once you get the basics down online tutorials have some advantages over books. They can devote more space to large screenshots of each step, so they are often easier to follow and understand. You also can find tutorials more specific to what you are doing.
