I am looking for advice, I would like to buy photoshop but I am very limited in funds and wonder if any of the older models work just as well as the new expensive versions. If so which one would you suggest. If not how is the most inexpensive way for me to get this program.

I have PS7 and it will do most of the stuff that the newer versions will. But (there's always a "but"), there are some cool features that PS7 doesn't have -- like the Adobe Camera Raw updated pluggin and the dynamic range expansion filter(I don't know what it's really called), the new shadows/highlights controls and numerous other things.

You might be better off getting something like PS Elements 4. It has a lot of the newer functions that CS has at a fraction of the price.

Maybe I'm confused, but I seem to remember something about a "student discount" being available for certain Adobe products.

If you google, you can find many sites purporting to sell licensed copies of many versions of Photoshop at quite cheap prices. I can't vouch for the legitimacy of these offers. One strategy that I've heard people use is to buy an older version of PS and then they only have to pay the "upgrade" price for the newest version. I guess this is legit' and can save you some bucks over buying the current version straight price.

If you can qualify for an academic discount there are several sites that sell academic software. You have to send them a copy of your student or faculty ID. Far and away the best academic deal is the full creative suite, but it is getting back to pricey. Do a google search for academic software if you have a student or faculty ID.

I think your best bet would be the CD only version of Paint Shop Pro X. It is made to sell with computer equipment so they have started sending a little piece of useless junk with it to make it legal. But it is the full program and registerable. It is a more complete program than Elements. This is about to expire but they come up regularly: http://cgi.ebay.com/Corel-Paint-Shop...QQcmdZViewItem

I'm not sure you are allowed to post on this forum if you even know the answer to that question. It is a method of exchanging pirated software.

If you don't need RAW manipulation (does your camera even save in RAW format?), then Adobe Photoshop 7 or Photoshop Elements will be fine.

I've tried Photoshop 7.0 & Photoshop Elements 4 and to my mind PS 7.0 is cumbersome to use, and PS Elements 4 has too many unnecessary bells and whistles.

I'm perhaps in a minority on this, but the one I find easiest & most convenient to to use is Photoshop Elements 2. You can buy this on eBay at quite a reasonable price. The only sigificant thing missing from it (for me) is the ability to make really fine adjustments in color balance.

But I've found that that function (fine adjustment of color balance) is included in Photoshop 5.0 Limited Edition - it came free with a 1.5 megapixels camera that I bought several years ago. So, I have both programs in my computer.
