Default Why does the pic size increase so much????

hey there verybody.
im really new to photography so please excuse my idiosy.

ive tried just adding my name and a small copyright logo to a pic using adobe photo deluxe and also with some standard windows photo editing software.
everytime i save the pic, its like a few Mb larger in size.
why is this??
all that im adding is a few words to a pic.

could someone please give me a beginners explanation as to why this is happening.
thanks a million.

Well. Do you save in jpg-format? Tiff? BMP?

jpg uses compression, Tiff can also use some compression, this can be the cause, you open a picture with compression, and save it with less compression.

hey there LCohen.
thanks for the reply.

when i first do the changes, i save it in the default setting.
i then go and rename the file extension to jpg which drops the size a bit but is still about 2-3 Mb bigger than the original pic.

do u think i should just invest in photoshop??
never seen it but see that most of the guys here use it.

thanks a mill.
Bryce.

Getting PhotoShop won't help you at all - you are stumbling over the stuff everyone does when they start using any photo editor.

That seems very odd to me - are you using a Mac?

hey there Bill.
thanks for the reply.
yip, i also find it very strange cause i am using a normal windows operating system.
there must be something i am doing wrong somewhere along the way, btu i think i will just have to play around with it some more and see what i can improve on.

i need to learn how to crop and things like that as well, so i got a lot to learn.
