With digital cameras, one can fire off 1,000 shots pretty quickly.
How many of the photos do you actually print, and how do you deal with having so many photos that .....they can just get lost in a sea of photo folders on a hard drive? In the old days, you had film cameras and every shot you took you had developed. So you might go on vacation and take 3 or 4 rolls of photos and then have them developed and put them in a photo album. At any time you can bring them to a friends house or when someone comes to your home, show the photos of your last trip.

With digital camera's printing every photo you take is too expensive with taking thousands of photos. It seems the average person just throws them on their hard drive and they barely look at them. Yes it's good to back them up on a CD, but they can get lost. 2 years can go by and your like oh I have not seen the photos I took on (X) trip in a while and you go back, try to find them and then look at them on your computer screen. I am kinda of old school I know. Getting great photos, sending them to a company like shutter bug, sending them to family and friends, and all that, but I find with a full time job, wife, kids, and normaly activities, it's hard to keep on top of all the photos your taking. Anyone else out there find the same thing.

Now that I have a new camera, I am trying to get more disciplined in taking the time to make the detailed folders on my computer so I can find things easier, and backing everything up on a CD. Then after having over 100 shots, find the ones I want to print, and email them to the local drug store and have them print them for me. But it seems you will still have hundreds of shots that are really nice just lost in the sea of photos on your hard drive. How do you guys deal with these issues?

Why do most studio photographers opt for medium-format cameras like the Hasselblad? I know part of it has to do with the fact that they need super high res prints for billboard size ads. Are medium format prints totally free of noise throughout the ISO range? Why do they run 40k plus? No more blown highlights because if a massive dynamic range?

I'm in the process of moving and my Internet provider tells me that I will lose service for ten days - Such is life... :(

Anyway, today I pulled my answering machine/telephone off the wall to set it up in my new place, and since I'm not moving until Friday, hooked up a cheap temporary phone, just to stay in touch - No dial tone. Turns out that the phone company disconnected me at that exact moment I pulled it off the wall. Also turns out that they connected to my new address at the same time.

As for my question? Here I am with a dead phone line, and yet my DSL connection is (as you can see) still working. I did not know that this was possible. Anyone knows how this works?
Apart from that pls. also educate me about the default lens kit. I want to take very sharp photos, i may also require reasonable zoom, indoor pictures. I hate blurred/shaky pics. Moreover if i don't go for a DSLR, which is the best p & s that i can find which could give me very sharp, crisp, blur free image quality, reasonable indoor/night shots, HD, reasonable zoom.

Where Next With DSLRs?

I ran across this interesting piece at the Zone-10 Web site today. It discusses some avenues camera manufacturers may take for the next generation...

I ran across this interesting piece at the Zone-10 Web site today. It discusses some avenues camera manufacturers may take for the next generation of improvements to DSLRs. This article is not brand-specific (although the author uses Canon in one case for illustrative purposes). Just a warning, the piece gets technical after the first page. But I think most may find it interesting:

http://zone-10.com/cmsm/index.php?op...d=461&Itemid=1

Personally I tend to agree with the author. For me, I think we've reached the point of diminishing returns with pixel counts. For APS-C cameras, I see no benefit in going beyond the 14-15mp level. Look at the results reviewers have been getting with the Canon 7D. This is a fine camera... but with 18mp, does one get real-world results better than other quality DSLRs offering 12-15mp? And then there's the issue of file size. Even at 14-15mp, I begin to question the space I'm using on my hard drive.

Of course, the very advancements in sensor technology discussed in this article may also change the resolution question. Any thoughts?

Purchased a Canon SD1200 a couple of weeks back. Outdoor shots look great, indoor shots under florescent light with and without flash were pretty good, but shots in the house with standard lighting (cans, track lighting) were horrible. Tried (all with and without flash in pretty good lighting) Auto, Indoor, and Personal setting while using ISOs of 400 and 800. Lots of noise on the pictures. Cannot even crop the pictures because of the noise.

One person suggested I exchange the camera for a new one to see if this makes a difference. Wondering if this makes sense, or do I need to find a better low light camera for $250 or so?

Or is there another setting that might work better?

Thanks!

I have a low end digital video camera and a top of the line DSLR.

Our church uses primarily spotlighting to illuminate the stage. If I take a video of the people on stage, the video comes out fairly decent.

But when I use my DSLR (without a flash) the photos are loaded with hot spots on light colored clothing and the faces of Caucasian people. In the low light, I can't shoot the DSLR at a very fast time value, but people are moving, so i get blurring.

Why is it that a video camera is able to handle the contrasted light so much better than a DSLR?

Many have said this is how the company's rake in the money...that it's not worth getting....that if you are going to have a problem, most likely it will be within the first year of owning the camera.

There are many things that could go wrong with a SLR camera. I am thinking about dropping the $100 or so to extend it for another 2 years. Do you agree with this philosophy?

When I mentioned to a very experienced photograher that I thought digital photos seemed to be "soft" to me in terms of sharpness compared to 35 mm print photos he told me that even "print" photos were sharpened by the processor lab.
Can someone tell me if that is a true statement?
Is is just my "old" eyes or are digital photos really not as sharp even when they are in focus?
Thanks for any feedback.

megapixels and larger prints

As some of you know, I am currently on the hunt for a new DSLR. One thing that I would want from this camera is the ability to produce beautiful large prints from time to time. Naturally, this has a fair bit to do with megapixels. The cameras that I am looking for are 10, 12 and 15 megapixel machines. I would like to know what the differences between these three resolutions really are when it comes to printing.

DPreview offers "absolute resolution" and "extinction resolution" parameters in their camera reviews. Looking at those, I can see that, between 10 and 15 megapixels, the absolute resolution difference is rather small - perhaps 20% each way. The extinction resolution difference, however, is significantly larger. What precisely does this mean? Also, are they taking into account photoshop's photo-enlargement algorithms?

The above questions are quasi-theoretical, but I am at least just as interested in people's real-world, first-hand experience of megapixels and printing. I am curious if there are some among you who have found their camera's megapixel count to be a wall, such that you wanted to produce a picture of a certain size but could not due to your lack of megapixels? Also, for those of you who do print large - how many megapixels do your cameras have? How large do you feel comfortable printing?

Thank you for your time,

Here is a list of American Photo's Editor Choices for 2009.
Nikon D3X $8,000
Canon EOS 5D Mark II $2,700
Nikon D700 $3,000
Sony Alpha 900 $2,700
Pentax K7 $1,200
Nikon D90 $1,000
Canon EOS 50D $1,200
Olympus E30 $1,050
Lumix GH1 $1,300
Nikon D5000 $730
Olymus E620 $700
Sony Alpha 330 $650
Canon EOS Rebel T1i $800
Each of these was awarded best in categories -- Pro, Semi Pro, Advanced D-SLR, Advanced D-SLR, and Entry Level D-SLR. Now what determines which of these categories the camera falls into? Obviously its the price so instead of saying Expensive and most durable to Least Expensive and least durable they relate it to the use by the photographer. Pros can afford to have the 'best'. While lowly amateurs are relegated to the 'cheaper' models. I should include in the list my Fuji Finepix S700 which sells now for $150. Now since the Nikon D3X sells for 50 times my Fuji, does it give 50 times a better picture? Under ideal conditions for the Fuji would a photo shot by both be noticeably different? To the tune of $7,850? Now obviously, the quality of both cameras have to be different. But is that difference really worth the money? The D3X is capable of low light shooting which the Fuji is not. If I could choose which camera Id buy, it would be the Nikon. But when I buy a camera its based on what I can afford for the best picture quality I can get. Its all about picture quality. How many are concerned with automatic features? Facial recognition and even if the eyes are open or closed. They sell cameras now that do everything themselves except choose their owner. I only want a camera which will let me take a picture all by myself. But nowadays you have to pay for all the auto features whether you will use them or not. Is having movie capabilities something a still photographer wants? Each year they offer a new bell or whistle to maintain the current price instead of dropping the price as production becomes cheaper to produce. Is there anyone who has a Nikon D3X who can tell me why it costs 50 times my Fuji S700? Or a Canon EOS 5D Mark II or Sony Alpha 900 costs 18 times? Is image quality directly related to the cost of the camera?

With my new DSLR acquisition consisting of several lenses, camera and the camera bag, what kind of security procedure I may encounter at an airport. In the past, I had point and shoot and that was a non issue. I know that I have to take out my laptop computer and put it in a separate container while going through the airport security. Any such requirements for my camera gear? Also, do the airline count it as an extra carry on?
