One of my special interests are point and shoot cameras, or digicams. Everyone is familiar with the new "stars" such as the Canon S-90 and G-11 cameras. However, we sometimes don't pay much attention, or gloss over, the "lesser lights" in a product line such as Canon's.

When I was recently scanning through www.pbase.com looking at the image quality of various cameras, I stumbled on the surprising image quality produced by the Canon SX-110. It actually was better than the newer SX-120's image quality. In addition, with some addition research, I determined that it also produces rather amazing image quality at numerically high ISO settings. That is something that that often gets overlooked in digital cameras at this price point.

So I has started the thread to take a little better look at the SX-110, its image quality, and the functionality it offers. Our first photo sample is a typical Fall Foilage photo. Noce the sharpness, and colors.

Have a great day.

I have been thinking about upgrading my S2 to the new generation of ultra zooms. I've been to the camera shop twice and played around with the SX1, I can't seem to get a picture that looks as good as my S2. The pictures aren't as sharp, when zoomed in it actually shoots at a slower shutter speed as compared to my S2. I can't find any reason to buy this camera, I shoot alot of pictures outdoors, mostly scenery, closeups, animals etc and was hoping to get more performance. In low light I have to shoot at least 2 steps up in ISO to get the same shutter speed, am I missing something here?? Thankyou for any replies!

Welcome to a brand new thread. After beginning our thread on the Canon G-11 it soon became obvious that we ought to investigate the Canon S-90 as well. So that is exactly what we will do in this thread.

My Canon S-90 arrived this morning, November 17th. I charged the battery and after installing the battery, and taking the S-90 in hand I was immediately taken with the samll size of the S-90. My Goodness, that smallness is almost addictive!

As you can see from the attached photo, even the size comparison between the G-11 and the S-90, so you can imagine that sitting the S-90 side by side with a DSLR camera like the Caon 50D or the Nikon D-90 would very dramatic indeed!
I was going to set up the slide projector and I have a tape recorder with which every evening we are going to go through some slides with her giving commentary. As a user, how do you feel about the performance of the Canon G-11? Is the improvement really substantial? Or, is it what you would expect in the changes from one model year to another?

The best fitting battery for the CANON A570IS is the SANYO HR-3U-2BP-2700
I bought the battery and recharged it for almost 7 hrs with my UNIROSS 300 charger and I clicked 150 pics & videos with 80% of them with full flash & LCD on, using zoom everytime.

Till Now I've not seen the low battery indicator yet.

So the verdict is go for SANYO 2700mah batteries. Should be MADE IN JAPAN. :sport-smiley-004:.

I was abt to give the Camera to service centre for evaluation but now I will not. Earlier I was using a UNIROSS 2100mah batteries they were just crap..
Not tried the Eneloop because they are 2100mah.
During charging the batteries were not even warm, keep aside hot.
You need to charge them before the first use.

I need to buy someone a Christmas gift who wants a very simple bag for their cannon G10 that will hold just the camera and spare battery (no need for extra accessories to be carried). They don;t even have a spare memory card for it (they use an 8GB card in it).
Any suggestions. This person told me the smaller the bag the better.

I again went to another old Fort they call them Battery s here and my Sayno camera again had some slight problems when we my son and I was using it ...At the first Fort Manchester in the old Engine room would not flash until I hit the button three times only when I was in the room once I stepped out it would be fine...
This second Fort Worden it would not zoom while out side a room and it gave this inscription in the Screen: 0x20911 (with a red line that it sat in).... Did not take any pictures in any rooms with it only stood out side the rooms with this camera. I was having a lot of neg feelings there that day it was cold and the tide was up high hardly any beach at the Fort that day.

Is there any connection with Camera functions malfunctioning and the old Fort Engine rooms at these old Battery's locations that any one knows of ... or is the Sea air that will cause this to happen?
They do say that the battries will not work properly in some cold weather conditions.. any one with information for I know that Batteries stored in a cold fridge would keep better that is where I and my grandparents have always stored our batteries. Nora

Hi

This camera behaves very strangely, especially in low-lighting.

Often it just refuses to take a picture, or takes one when the "flash" symbol is light in the viewfinder, but doesn't flash.

This even happens if the flash is turned to "On" (not just "Auto").

Sometimes if you play about changing the shooting mode / type of autofocus it might work, bit often not.

Often when this happens, the orange focus assist light (on front of camera) stays permanently lit until you take finger off shutter button.

Also, it sometimes doesn't want to take a picture in daylight ! You either get the focus square (on LCD image)) staying orange or not appearing at all.

I bought this camera over 12 months ago and Canon haven't been very helpful e.g fault vs some setting that needs changing vs operator error etc. - all they have advised is send it for repair.

Can anyone shed further light on this problem ?

thanks

My Canon S3 IS, purchased a few years ago, has been having progressively worsening problems with its shutter failing to open. It is now at the point where it simply no longer works. I learned on the web that this is a problem common to some Canon camera's but Canon has not seen fit to make a recall of the S3 or offer to repair it at a reasonable cost. I have owned many Canon cameras and other products over the years and have always been very happy with their quality (my Canon A1 still functions perfectly), thus I am tempted to replace my S3 with one of Canon's newer models but cannot in good conscience do this if there is a potential that in a few years time I will experience the same or similar types of problems. So my question is - have these problems definitely been fixed in the newer models?

Hello,...I'm a casual user of this website and received excellent help from many contributors. I'm trying to decide about 3 different cameras and/or one new lens. I currently own a Canon XSi which came with the 2 kit lenses, 18-55 IS, and the 75-300mm telephoto, which I have had for a little over one year. To be honest, I've not been happy with this camera or lenses since I've always had problems getting close up photos in good focus. The results have been poor image quality when viewed at 100%. I have done all the effort with Canon, sending everything back for testing, and getting everything back with only one comment,.."The camera and lenses are within spec."

My passion for shooting close-ups, flowers, and telephoto images has not done down, it just keeps growing as I view what others have created. I'm looking at the Canon SX1, SX10, SX20, and/or the possibility of a new lens for the XSi. I'm also looking at the Tamron 18-250/270 lens for my XSi. I have read most all of the reviews on all of this equipment and looked at 100's of images on many websites. This has not given me the information to make the decision.

This really got started when Tamron started putting out ads for their new 18-270mm lens and this got me to investigate other new technology such as the SX1, and the “S” series. I already own the S3 IS, and the G7, and the SD1000, and I just got the G10 for my daughter. I love my G7 for what it does.
I found a thread on this website on the SX1 camera and while many people have posted information, the outstanding images that have been put up by Donalduck have just really put me in a daze. He claims that most all of these cameras are great and than any of them will take great pictures. He says to “just forget the spec’s,.. go out and shoot and learn. His images demonstrate so much skill it is easy to see why he could use any of these cameras and still take outstanding pictures. For the reset of us, and specifically me,… I want to know up front that I have a GOOD camera before I invest my $$$ and time to do the learning. So here is how I pose the question. Is it all about the Technology differences,… or is it all about getting the skill?

1. The SX1, SX10, and the SX20 all have the EXACT same lens, and the same Canon Digic IV processor chip, and very similar controls, functions, and camera body. Of course there is the Video difference but I would like to not consider that up front, as my first requirement it shooting good pictures. The SX1 has a New CMOS image sensor, while the SX10 and SX20 have the identical CCD image sensor as the Canon XSi. So is the only difference just the Sensor???

2. Some say that all of the “S” series cameras have terrible ISO NOISE at ISO 400 and above. Others say the SX20 has lower image quality than either the SX1 or SX10. Since the technology is so similar what is it that makes the difference, or is it just not having the skill to make the shot that makes the difference?

3. The Canon XSi claims to have one of the best built in Noise Reduction software for all ISO settings up to 1600, but that chip is the DigiC III and not the newer DigiC IV. So how does the NOISE in the SX1, SX10, and SX20 get so bad at only ISO 400? I can’t believe that the Canon engineers took all of this NR function out of the firmware, just to protect the sales of the XSi. This does not make sense. If you’ve got a chip that does great things,… you use it.

4. The other question is all about another lens for my XSi. Given the XSi does not suffer from ISO noise, then why wouldn’t the Tamron 18-270mm lens be a great all in one lens for that camera, and could it shoot the outstanding images similar to Donalduck,… given some training and more skill?

Is it all about the technology or is it the skill? I think it is both.

so i got my s5is, took the same shoot, and everything was ok.

ccd vs cmos?

i went to the shop where i bought the second one.

the guy got another one, brand new, same problem.

:dontknow:ohhhhh gosh !!!

what's happening? has any one detected this fault yet?

i bought this camera because i believed it was a good one, but if you are not working at 80 asa, it will spoil your pictures as soon as it reaches 400 ASA.

 i cant find info on this problem anywhere.. so i am asking you if you could test yours at home and reply. 3 with the same fault makes sense only if the latest firmware change was mistaken or if an hardware problem with the cmos power flux, due to discontinue absorbtion, forces it to flicker because it can't stand the refresh....or something of the kind

now i've sent them both to be repaired, and discvered that even a630 power shot that i own, shows the same problem, ( but less visible, 20 % ), and even creates a pair of plasma vertical fluxes on the 640x480 movie, that look violet -purple -blue and running upward continuosly.

if i needed a plug in, or any special effects, i might use photoshop.

without talking about ORBS, THAT APPEAR FROM TIME TO TIME ON THESE CAMERAS.

IS IT A NIGHTMARE? or just a consequence of the crisis?

Is there any advantage to the SD980IS over the SX200IS, besides size?

It appears from the specs that the SX200 has a better zoom, plus aperture and shutter priority, but is slightly thicker. The street price is about the same for these cameras.

Am I missing anything besides size that would give the SD980 an advantage over the SX200?
