I noticed on a camera review (video clip done by another photography website) that when in LV mode you can display a "live histogram" on the LCD. Is it also visible in the VF (viewfinder)?

Did see an "exposure scale" at the bottom of the VF. Is that the only way to check your exposure while looking through the VF? Or is that just to tell you where you have your EV set at? (as in the case in Nikon DSLRs like my D300).

I have spent the last few days trying to figure out if I have a focus problem and have discovered the problem is with my 40D body. I brought home a Rebel from work and did some comparison shots using the same lens on each camera. The Rebel was clearly sharper than my 40D. I took it to the camera store where I purchased the camera and they repeated the test and had similar results. They are sending the body back to Canon for repairs. Fortunately the camera is still under warranty.

I know that I need to learn more and improve technique but having a camera that focus correctly has got to make a difference. I just wish I had figured this out 8 months ago when I got the camera.

When the camera comes back should I expect the Rebel and 40d to produce equal results or should the 40D produce better results?

Editing RAW Canon images

When I shoot in RAW, here are the steps I go thru in editing.

I shoot in Canon RAW.
Up load the images to my computer and open then in Canon Digital Photo Pro Software.

Then I immediately save them as 8 bit tiff files

Then I do all my editing in Photoshop Elements.

The reason I do it this way is because:
Canon DPP doesn't do much editing, it mostly just does converting.
My version of PSElements can't handle 16 bit tiff, so I do 8 bit tiff.
I do tiff because the file size is larger than if I used jpeg and because the photo printer I use can handle tiff without being converted to jpeg.
I use PSE because I understand Photoshop and PSE works a wee bit easier for me.

Is there a better way for a Canon shooter to manage and edit files?

When I broke down and bought my 10D, the 20D came out a few months later. When I updated to the 40D, the 50D came out. I'd hate to get a 5D MK II and have the MKIII come out 4 months later.

I am about to purchase the xt1. Right now, there is a special and I can get it with the kit lens and a 55-250 mm lens for a total of $899.

I think that I would like to get the 50 mm lens too. I can get the camera and kit lens (no telephoto lens) for $699 - then would add the cost of the 50 mm lens (f1.8).

My question: I use my camera mainly for photographing an active 4 year old and her friends - often in low-light and obviously often in movement! Is it better to get the telephoto lens package or should I just get the kit lens + 50 mm? I don't want to just have lenses that I don't use around, but then I have not had a DSLR yet, so, I don't have to hands on knowledge of whether I will rely mainly on one lens or many?

Thanks for any insights/advice

I've discussed in several places on this web site about my "Assumed Focus Problem" with my Canon XSi Camera and the kit lenses. Others that have responded to my posts have asked me to "Show me the Money", or in other words,... show me the images. After getting some education on how to do this from Hards80 I was successfull in getting the links to my uploaded images.

The quick story is that about a year ago I got my XSi just before Xmas. I had told all my kids and grandchildren all about it and made a long list of little extra things they could get me for Xmas. We had planned a very large family get together. When I got the camera and started shooting, my first subject of course where flowers, because that is what I do. I was shocked to see the images were not as good as my G7 or my older S3 IS. I started testing every which way I could with every focus chart I could find. I spend hours on the tech support line with Canon Photo experts.

My Xmas was not that good because I was very unhappy about the Camera and I wanted Canon to take it back. I even went as far as going down and testing a medium priced Nikon and every image I shot with that camera was great.

Canon asked me to send the camera back with all the lenses and I did. Three weeks later I got it all back with a very small note saying, "The camera and both lenses are within Specifications".

I've spend the rest of 2009 shooting half the time with my G7 and the rest with the XSi,.. trying to learn more about the Front Focus problem. At one time I even described it as a lack of ability to focus on a certain spectrum of colors, specifically the Magentas.

Recently I was sparked into new investigations by members of this web site, and I'm glad they did it. I've competed a new series of Focus testing and have confirmed, "The camera has excellent focus on all subjects that provide good to high contrast targets" However, If the target is any image that has poor contrast, I won't get good focus.

The point is I have learned that you can't put the single focus point (the little square at the center of the lens) totally on a low contrast target.
If you look at the first picture in the series I have posted I had set the target totally on the petals of the magenta vinca flower. These petals if you examine them very closely you will find THERE IS NO CONTRAST in these petal. It is not like the petal of a rose that has viens and some testure, these petals only refect a monochrome color of magenta. There is not even any contrast in the color, i.e., from light to dark or to shadows.

I learned when taking telephoto images of the moon, that you can't get focus on the moon where there are no craters. It's the same thing with this type flower, and many other flowers that have no contrast.

The Canon XSi is supposed to have a new "Phase Detection" Focus system, but I can't find where I read that or what it is or how it works. I do know that my older Canon G7 does a much better job at focusing on these low contrast images than my XSi.

You can go to my Flickr website to look at the images in 100% and I have loaded most all of them in the links below.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/trigger1937/

Unfortunatley all my comments for each of these images are still up on the flickr website. If you don't mind, just open up two windows and you can view all of the comments for each picture. If anyone feels they have a better understanding of why I get the Front Focus on certain images, I would really appreciate your knowledge.

I have made many mistakes with camera purchases :bash:(is there a Camera Anonymous).:o I bought an XSi with the 2 lens kit earlier this year, and was unhappy, so sold it and replaced it with a 'bridge' camera. Still unhappy and realized that I should have never made that stupid move. Now i want to go back to a dSlr with other choices of lens but wonder if the T1i is worth the upgrade over the Xsi. I absolutely do not need the video, and other than that can't see much reason to pay the extra. Perhaps some of you opinionated photogs could sway me.

I am considering getting a canon Xsi/T1i DSLR, but I would want to get it with a good lens. I wouldn't need a huge zoom range (7-18 to 50-100 would probably be alright) but I would like it to be very sharp, image stabalized and affordable. Does canon have such a lens?

We were at the beach this past weekend, and I could not get my XSi to focus to take night shots. I mean really night, was very cloudy and I was trying to take pics of the water from a hotel room balcony. The waves were kicked up because of the weather. I looked back in my manual, and all I could find were instructions for taking night potraits. I guess with pretty much no light,(just a little from the hotel lights), its not going to focus? (I know on the point and shot cameras we have had, there was a selection for "night shots".) Anyone know what I should have done, or was that just not possible?
