Well I am still going off the deep end here. Ordered some Alien Bees studio lighting, 2 strobes, stands, and umbrellas. Now a whole new process and learning curve begins. I have 3 families lined up to come over in two weeks to our house for photos in my soon to be rigged up basement studio - Oh My!!

Plan to be taking a bunch of practice shots during the Thanksgiving holiday break.

Help with continuous lighting please

I have a sony a300 with external flash hvl-f42am. I usually take indoor pics of my kids. I love photography but right now I just want to have good quality pics of my kids so its basically a hobby of mine. I'm very dissatisfied with the lighting. Today I had to shoot with ISO 400 even with my flash and the noise is killing me. I was using the flash to bounce off my ceiling so that I don't have harsh shadows.

Since i'm working with my kids its usually a very quick shoot (less than an hr), they're young and don't have much patience for me and pictures.

I'm looking for ideas on continuous lighting, I would rather avoid flashing if possible and think if I have adequate lighting then I won't need the flash at all. Good idea?

Ideal lighting would be portable, inexpensive, lightweight. I shoot in my almost empty family room so its not a huge space.

I appreciate any advice. I tried reading some of the posts on lighting and i'm so lost.

If you have suggestions on other options i'm open to those also.

Thank you.

Lighting for large group photo

Hi, I am a new photographer and have my first photo shoot for a large group (about 60-65). I went to scope out the location today and it is a small restaurant party room. I have a space picked out for the photo and have decided to leave the group standing and use a ladder to shoot above them. I have two questions, 1. How do I use a tripod if I am using a ladder? I have seen that suggested, but have no idea how I would pull that off.
2. Lighting issue. There is minimal light in the small room and I wanted to just shoot with my flash that attaches to my hot shoe on my camera.

Is that type of lighting going to be ok or do I need to pull out some bigger equipment (which I would really rather not)?

Thanks!
S.
