I have the T1i with the 18-55 mm kit lens. I posted yesterday about a zoom for candid kid pictures and after reading some other posts and doing some research, I don't think I need a 200mm zoom, but could get something with a smaller range. I need something that is easy to carry around - I can take it to the park on a daily basis. Fast AF is a big deal to me - especially in low-light (I will get an external flash). Willing to spend in the $500-600 range.

Uses: candid kid shots (action/indoor and out - will get an external flash). Want to be able to get the candid shot without being in the way and completely obvious.

Additional use: vacation shots

I am an amateur photographer.

Opinions on these lenses? I know the Canon is new and there are not too many reviews out there. Is there another range that I should consider instead?

Thanks!

I'm preparing for a photo shoot and have a Portrait lens question.

I'm aware that there's a great deal of consensus about the right set-up for portrait work. Shooting with a focal length between 85 - 100 and an f11.

Using the gear I currently own, I can get there two ways:

Canon 70-200 IS 2.8f or
Canon 28-135 IS 3.5 - 5.6

Which of these lenses are more likely to deliver better results? I know the 70-200 lens is the better lens, but just not sure if these a reason the 28-135 fits this scenario better.

I just graduated from a Panasonic DMC-FZ28 to a Canon T1i. I have the kit lens. I am an amateur photographer with no aims (or finances) to be anything but a good amateur. That said, I take pictures almost everyday.

I already miss the zoom feature of the Panasonic! I have read most of the other recent posts on lenses and get the need to use the kit lens for awhile and to learn composition - but your legs cannot take you to the middle of the pool for your kid's swim lesson. Or if you want the "real" picture where your kid does not give you the cheesey grin (b/c you are not in their face with the camera), but you are able to fill the frame with their face. Or the toddler who is walking towards you and you need some distance between you and the toddler to compose the shot (I said I am an amateur), but you want the close-up.

I cannot spend a lot of money, but want something that will go the distance in terms of growing with my family and being useful for vacation shots too. So what lens?

I have been following the other wide angle lens threads as well as searching the history and can not find an answer for my wide angle question.

I am considering upgrading my current wide angle kit lens, a Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM for my Canon 40D. I would mainly use this for landscapes and indoor family photo stuff, but I would also like it to be capable of some sports shooting if possible. I went back and check the EXIF data from a cycling event this past summer and I used the 17mm for a few of the shots.

I would prefer a 2.8 but am not sure if that should be a requirement. How important is a f2.8 vs. f4? I do have a flash that could be used assuming the situation allowed it. I am not finding anything that will cover the range that the kit lens currently does so it seems like there would be a trade off on one end or the other. If I compromise should it be on the wide end or the zoom? I am thinking the wide is more important?

The lenses that look like they may have potential are:

Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC $420 –it has the 2.8 and good range but not sure it would be much better image than the current kit lens.
Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 $650 Would this focus fast enough for a sports situation?
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM $714 - missing the 2.8 and zoom.
Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM $900 missing the wide end
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM $1030 - missing the zoom, plus at this price seems like it should be an L with better construction and weather seals. Also if I ever got a full frame camera I don’t think this lens would be compatible.
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM $1150 missing the 2.8 and zoom
Canon Zoom EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM $1300 missing the wide end
Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM $1450 missing the zoom.

The other lenses I have are the 50mm f1.8, Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM. Also have the Canon 580 Speed light.

Any recommendations or option I am not thinking about here? I would prefer a one lens solution over two.

Hi, I've got a 40D with the 17-85 lens that came with it. I've been taking indoor party shots at home and all of them have turned out blurred. I experimented with the iso levels, even putting it as high as 800+ and still the shots were dire. I changed over to the 50 lens and eventually got some shots but due to the frame size (?) I can't get a wide enough shot.

I know I should be able to get better shots than I am at the moment but as Christmas is coming up I was thinking of asking Santa to buy me a shiney new lens to make life a little easier.
So to summarize , the shots I take are mainly of children playing indoors, general family / holiday shots

I'm currently in the market for what I have seen on-line refered to as a "vacation lens", i.e. a 18-200mm zoom to replace the 18-55mm kit lens on my Canon T1i.

1.) I'm pretty certain I want to stay at 18mm at the wide angle end

2.) Image quality is very important, but cost is also a factor

With those criteria, 2 lenses appear to potentially meet my needs:

Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (~$600)

Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical IF Macro AF (~$600)

Any advice in choosing one over the other? Are there other 18-xxxmm lenses that I should be considering?

Thx.

I am trying to formulate a short list of canon lenses for a 50D I plan to purchase. My budget is tight but I could use points to help with the expenditure.

I would like to have a zoom for outdoor sports but my shots will likely be from the stands. I've considered the EF70-200/2.8f USM IS but the cost is holding me back. I think it is the best lens for me except for the price.
I started to think about getting a prime such as the 200/2.8f but there is no IS. I've looked into the Sigma and Tamron zooms but not sold on their performance.

My other photo interests would be to take low light photos with ambient light. I'm new to DSLR so all I've seen from my indoor photography are horrible flash photos and I'm tired of it. With that said I know I could use the big 70-200mm f2.8 for indoor but I'm not going to want to carry a heavy lens all of the time.

I guess my question is what sport lens and what lens for low light indoor photography. Can a kit lens on a 50D produce decent low light photos?
Somehow I think not.

Would love to hear suggestions. I might get the 70-200/f2.8 if I could find a light weight walk around lens. Then again when I'm going to a game I could use the 200m prime with an extender for 300mm. Having no IS worries me I've read I don't need it for outdoor sports but it would be helpful in low light situations such as night games right?

I know I'm all over the place which is why I decided to post.

Thanks,

I am looking for a new lens for my Canon Digital XTI. My daughter does competitive cheer so I am looking for a lens that will give me good shots...

I am looking for a new lens for my Canon Digital XTI. My daughter does competitive cheer so I am looking for a lens that will give me good shots there. Usually the stage is lit up with a lot of very bright lights so maybe I don't need to worry too much about lighting? I obviously need to be able to take good action shots while they are moving too. I currently have a Tamron 80-210 4.5/5.6 and the kit lens that came with my camera, not sure if that is how to describe it right. I can get pretty decent shots with my tamron, but I sometimes have problems getting the whole team on the floor because it doesn't zoom out enough. I also usually have to switch back and forth between lenses before the competition so I can get group shots or whatever before they go on or afterwards for awards. So I would like one lens that can cover all of this.

I started looking at the 18-200 or 28-200 lenses and i think that is what would work best for me, but there are so many out there i really have no idea which one to choose, which brand, etc. I've been trying to read reviews and so many say they are slow focus which isn't going to work well. I don't want to spend a ton, maybe around $300? Am I going to be able to get something decent for that? Or do I need to keep saving and use what I have? I'm getting more confused the more I read.

I would really appreciate any help or suggestions you can give.

Thanks,
