High School Basketball with K-7

For several reasons not relevant to the forum I have not been shooting sports this fall, but last night our school's basketball coach asked me to shoot a set of games since he was matched up against his brother as the opposing coach for the first time. This gave me the chance to check out the Pentax K-7 in our cave of a high school gym for the first time.

I shot at ISO 3200 with a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens. The big problem with the earlier Pentax DSLR's has been speed and accuracy of focus, particularly in limited light situations like a gym. Probably the best measure I have of how much the new camera has improved in this area is that I threw out almost no shots because of poor focus. Overall, greatly improved performance. Problems with these shots have to be blamed on the shooter, not the camera.

Believe it or not, the kid made this off-balance throw.

Lighting was so inconsistent that I dumped my custom white balance and let the camera adjust with automatic white balance, then corrected as best I could in Lightroom. Still, there were inconsistencies.

Overall, the evening was a lot of fun. I had not thought about using the Tamron lens for sports before, but the flexibility of the zoom was nice and the 28-75mm range was excellent for shooting from under the basket.

Feedback is welcome.

Paul

BTW, for those struck by the "Texas" jerseys, our high school was not challenging the Longhorns. The opponent was Texas High School from their side of the line in Texarkana, which straddles the Arkansas-Texas line.

A BMW had gone off into the gravel trap in front of me and sprayed dust everywhere caught the Torana airborne over the curb from the corner of my eye, quickly spun around and fired a few shots. The driver was Ok (Lindsay Woolward), the fire was put out quickly and there was not to much damage to the car, apparently some oil had been dropped on the track.
Of course had the wrong settings for these shots (was taking some slow shutter speed shots 1/60 sec) and had a huge cloud of dust. This is my best effort salvaging the shots in PS.

I got access to the 'crows nest' above one of the rims for one game. These were shot basically straight down through the metal grate that you stand on. I was shooting blind because it was difficult to keep my eye on the viewfinder and follow the action, so I missed a bunch. Any tips on how to better follow action from this type of angle? Any other C&C more than welcome as well.

All shot with Canon 50D, 70-200mm f/2.8. ISO 2500-3200, f/2.8, 1/400-1/500. I eventually switched to manual focus and picked the bottom of the net as my focus point - seemed to get better results that way..
I already own the fixed 85mm f1.8 and love it but would like to supplement that with something with range. Does anyone have any feedback as to which of the above they would suggest? .....Ebay for the used Nikkor or get a new Sigma? (i'm also intrigued by the Sigma 50-150mm as that range suits me even better) Thanks, David

Maybe this belongs in the memory card forum but since it is about sports shooting I decided to put it here.

For those of you who are serious sports shooters like John G etc what memory cards do you use and recommend as far as speed and size goes for shooting action sports (basketball, baseball, football etc.

I have been using 133x Transcend and Sandisk Extreme III cards with an A200 and A700 Sony Bodies.

Should I be looking at 300x speed cards and Extreme IVs.

Fir fire and rescue action shooting the extreme IIIs seem to be pretty fast.

Hi:

Hi:

I am now using a Sony A700 as my body. I have a Tamorn 28 - 300mm lens and the sony kit 18 - 70mm. I can also borrow the sony kit 55 - 200mm as needed (kit lenses meaning the ones that cane with the A200).

I am looking to expand to another lens that would be good for general sports shooting. I am mainly going to be doing baseball and track and field with the occasional football and basketball game thrown in. I did a charity basketball game last year with the 28 - 300 mounted on an A200 and got some decent shots at ISO 1600.

So if I was to get "one" more lens what would you recommend? The thing I noticed about the 28 - 300 is that in low light situations its too dim needs to be lower f/s number in order to get better shots and possibly focus faster.
