The new way is that She wants a camera that has some meat to it..bulky!!
She doesn't want a credit card sized camera.. The budget is about $250 I did look at the Sony DSC H20 but it's still small.. A Canon SX120 is alittle bigger..
I know she wants something like a DSLR but it's out of the question right now.. budget wise
I figure something along the line of 5in wide 3in high .. and great photo's

Any idea's ?

Thanks

Still looking ... :) This is going to be a bit wordy -- I post it in the hopes that others are likely following a similar path.

I'm a painter, looking to get my first "good" camera. It is correct to assume that
- I am just learning about photography
- I know a lot about color, vision, and have a developed sense of what I like
- my budget, while variable, is limited; I really need to make every dollar count (not willing to spend $400 on a camera I won't like, I have upped my initial outlay)
- I am going to use the camera as a digital drafting implement and note-taker
- I am _not_ interested in snapshots, family shots, or sports shooting
- I will shoot RAW and carefully process the images I like.

I have looked at a lot of cameras and images and read obsessively about cameras for weeks (This forum and site, Photography Blog, Imaging Resource, DP Review, Luminous Landscape, and Reid Reviews -- all highly recommended.) The steps I've climbed in my search for the right photography equipment have gone something like this (with, in brackets, the worthy cameras I have left behind at each step along the way):

• Because I insist on high quality images and I will be examining the colors of individual pixels, I have moved towards as large a sensor as I can afford [all P&S cameras, in particular: Panasonic LX3, Panasonic ZS1/3, Panasonic FZ28/35; Canon SX10/20, Canon S90, Canon G10/11; Sony WX1, etc.]

• Because my budget is limited and I expect to do several kinds of shooting with one camera (portrait/still life, landscape, street/coffeeshop, panorama), I need a versatile camera or camera system. [Sigma DP1/2/1s (I love the Sigma images I've seen), Ricoh GRIII]

• So I've mounted to the DSLRish step, where the path forks. In the middle, the wide and well-travelled path of established true DSLR's, with the entry level ones beckoning up front, and off the side, the Four-Thirds and Micro-Four-Thirds. The mFT cameras appeal to me because, all along, I have wanted a pocketable camera (cargo-pants?), and (perhaps more importantly) I want to be as unnoticed as possible when I shoot. (The Pentax K-x “Korejanai” takes a different route which I considered: it calls attention to itself in a playful way.)

I can't really decide betw. the various "starter" DSLRs and the mFT cameras. (DSLR pro: speed, extensibility, sensor size. DSLR con: size, weight, presence, sound. mFT pro: size, weight.)

The Panasonic G1 seems to be the best compromise for me right now. It can be had (with the very good 14-45 kit lens) for $640 from B&H. I worry about buying a camera that is already a year old -- two product iterations in the fast-flowing digital imaging field.

The GH1 is out of my range and comes with video, which I have no current use for.
The GF1 is more expensive, does not have an articulated LCD screen, and for my use would need the optional EVF (which obviates the savings in bulk (I mean the size of the camera)over the G1, and carries the purchase price to the unreachable $1084.)

So should I pull the trigger for the G1?
If I do, what else should I get right away?
- very fast memory card for RAW
- 2nd battery
- wrist strap
- maybe the 20mm f1.7 pancake for the "cargo-pants-walkaround" setup?
- maybe the 45-200 (=90-400 35mm) Panasonic lens?
- remote control (this is must-have for me)
- desktop tripod (also a must-have)
- white balance disk (??)

Thanks for responses -- and for the great inf. in the forums. :icon_lol:

Hello Camera experts

I'm no professional, so I'm looking for a new camera that's not too difficult to use.

My current everyday camera is an Olympus 1030SW. I bought it because we are avid cruisers & spend a lot of time at the beach. It has worked well for that. However, it has a lousy zoom. We're going an an Alaskan cruise in a couple months and I know my camera will never capture all there is to see.

Here's what I'm looking for...
Something with a great clear zoom!
Easy to use
Less than $400
It doesn't have to be pocket-sized, but purse sized would be great!
Video not necessary - we won't even use it.
A good auto setting, but I'm ok w/ learning the manual adjustments too.
Nothing needs printed larger than 4x6.

Mostly outdoor use - occasional indoor.
I'm hoping to catch some great landscape/scenery shots.
Occasional night-time use - so just average pics would be OK there.
Rarely for moving objects (hopefully a whale or two, but thats about it)

Any suggestions?

After progressive upgrades using the Lumix series TZ3, TZ4 i switched to the Sony H20 seeking manual controls and better video.

However with a 1 year old kid i find that I now take most of the photographs are indoors, and the Sony H20 though having good indoor photos with flash is hampered by the shutter lag and slow flash recycle times, and photos without the flash are just too noisy. I also tried out the Panasonic ZS3 and found that without a flash it was useless indoors and a lot worse than the Sony, though with the flash it performed well, aided by the faster faster flash recycle times, thought the autofocus was not quick. However the flash on the ZS3 was weak.

While a DSLR is as sensible options, for me the camera needs to be small so that it can be chucked into a handbag or a pocket if possible.

I have been now looking into the following options, but as it goes there is no perfect pocket friendly camera. However would like your opinions on the following. I am hampered by the fact that we don't have any of these cameras in the local market where i am residing (Sri Lanka), and will be getting the camera through a friend coming from the US, so my purchase heavily depends on your feedback based on usage experience :)

Sorry for the long post !!!!

1. Canon G11

Why i am considering

Large CCD sensor compared to other P&S

Manual mode with physical buttons and controls

Good auto mode until you learn the manual controls

Reservations

Lack of HD videos which is useful when you go on family trips and small parties is sad (forums says its a technical issue that limits HD, but i am sure something higher than VGA could have been given considering the G9 had 1024x768 at 15fps!)

Size, definitely not pocket friendly and you need a large coat or a handbag

 PRICE!

Some questions i have,

Is the autofocus fast enough to lock and take pictures of the small chap on the move indoors (not great lighting)?

Can i really get 5x7 (or 4x6) print size good indoor photos without the flash with this unit of people indoors (specially my small chap)

Does the optical zoom work on video mode

Can i use the white balance settings, etc on video mode

How good is the automatic mode?

Does autofocus work on video mode?

2. Canon S90IS

Why i am considering

Large CCD sensor compared to other P&S

Manual mode with cool rings for ease of use

Good auto mode until you learn the manual controls

Pocket friendly size

Reservations

Lack of HD video (same as the G11)

Forums says its a very slipper camera making it not very useable

The camera flash unit seems to have failed with some users, specially since forcing it shut is a complex process

 Build quality seems shoddy/bad

 Poor telephoto zoom

Some questions i have,

Is the autofocus fast enough to lock and take pictures of the small chap on the move indoors (not great lighting)?

Can i really get get 5x7 (or 4x6) print size good indoor photos without the flash with this unit of people indoors (specially my small chap)

Does the optical zoom work on video mode

Can i use the white balance settings, etc on video mode

Does autofocus work on video mode?

3. Fuji F70EXR

Why i am considering

Larger CCD sensor compared to other P&S, though smaller than the two canons

Manual mode

Pocket friendly size

10X zoom

Price :)

Reservations

Lack of HD video (same as the G11)

 Supposed purple fringing and noise

Some questions i have,

How good is the auto mode in this camera and the IQ?

Is the autofocus fast enough to lock and take pictures of the small chap on the move indoors (not great lighting)?

Can i really get get 5x7 (or 4x6) print size good indoor photos without the flash with this unit of people indoors (specially my small chap)

Is the sensor and quality of photos more like a G11 or more towards a ZS3 type?

The purple fringing issues is highlighted in reviews, is that as bad a problem as reported?

The image stabilization though mechnical seems to be not effective, again is it true?

Does IS work for videos as well?

Does autofocus work on video mode?

I took the Panasonic LX3 out of my list since the zoom is so low that you can't do much with it. Though HD video is nice, it seems it does not auto focus unlike the ZS3/TZ range (which though having their problems does fairly well, and here the Sony H20 definitely rules with superb auto focusing on videos).

Summary

In addition to your experiences and opinions specially on my questions, any samples indoor photos (of people and kids in particular, loads of samples i have seen are of outdoors!) that can be provided for any of these cameras would be most welcome.

Your recommendations are also most welcome :)

I need to replace the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W7 that I have had for 3 or 4 years. I am constantly getting the camera shake icon (even when I set it on a table) and the pictures come out blurry unless taken outside in daylight. I also can't get it to stay in "auto" mode. My dad's cybershot is a year older and his started doing this before it completely went out.

Here are my needs &/or picture taking habits:

I pretty much keep the camera in full auto mode because I don't understand any of the settings or options.
My kids play sports (softball, flag football, basketball, and tennis) and I want to capture this.
I take indoor pictures of the kids when they are performing at school (cafeteria or gym) or at church, etc.
I take family pictures indoors at holidays, birthdays, etc.
I take vacation pictures.
When I used 35 mm film, I got a Canon Rebel that I rarely used because it was cumbersome and my pictures didn't turn out that great. (I was expecting a lot more out of it.)
I have found that even my kids' $80 cameras take good pictures outdoors. I want something that can handle indoor shots when the kids are far away and sports action.
I am open to getting 2 cameras - one for sports & programs and one for travel and putting in my purse.
I really need a camera that can take good pictures w/out me knowing what to do other than push the button.
I'm not sure what my budget will be for the camera(s). I'm more concerned with finding out which camera(s) will meet my picture taking needs & then I'll decide if I'm willing to shell out the amount of money required (and if I can convince my husband that we need it!).

I think an SLR camera would best suit my sports and kids program needs, but if taking it out of the box, putting it on auto, and pushing the button isn't going to get me good pics, it won't be worth it. I don't want to think about lenses, extra flashes, ISO, white balance, or any of that other stuff. It gives me a headache. I wish I could understand it all, though!

Thanks!!!
Rhonda

I am researching cameras and like most people, my head is spinning. I started by looking at the cannon XS because a friend has it and gets good...

I am researching cameras and like most people, my head is spinning. I started by looking at the cannon XS because a friend has it and gets good pictures - the actions shots are what sold me. I then started researching, I wonder if I would be better off with the XSi or even the T1i.

So, my main uses:

- general family photography, family events, pets etc (don't have little kids anymore)

- horses. I own and ride a horse - I take a little point and shoot with me on trail rides but I would love to get great pictures, both still and "action shots" outdoor and in an indoor arena. It is hard to get good pictures inside an indoor arena with your typical point and shoot.

- dog hobby action shots. We are starting to do agility and it is fun to catch those action shots

- family vacations, scenery etc. I was so disappointed with my photos on my point and shoot from our trip to Yellowstone. I live in the west and we go to a lot of national parks for vacations and weekends and I like to take scenery and wildlife pictures.

- I have an older kid who plays soccer - indoor and outdoor. It would be fun to be able to photo the team, I don't even bother with my point and shoot and instead mooch photos off one of the other parents.

- my husbands real estate business. He used to hire a pro to do all of his shooting of listings, but times are tough right now. I would love it if this camera could take great wide shots, including the wide angle you need for photographing homes and properties.

I was going to list video, but since I know only one of the cameras I am looking at has it, I thought I should describe what I am thinking. I would love to have the video, but only if it is easy to use and gives decent results. I don't like having separate video cameras etc - I have always liked doing more still photography. I would like to use the video camera to do video home tours (for real estate) but not sure the T1i is up to that??? I would also use it for filming horses and riding, indoor and outdoor. I don't do much video now ... so I would probably only be interested in it if it is pretty good and not too hard to use.

I have a cheap point and shoot now - works okay for daily stuff but I don't get great shots. I used to have a nikon 5700 but it broke. I took great photos with that the nikon, but hated how slow it was, hard to do action shots of any kind.

I noticed that Cannon has a rebate going if you get the zoom lens. So, just for comparison purposes Costco has them priced at:
XS $669
XSi $800
T1i $900
Those prices are the body, the kit lens, zoom lens, some other accessories like battery pack, charger, SD card.

Would need to buy external flash if that is needed for those indoor shots.

It is in my budget to get the T1i, but I wonder if it is a waste - will the extra features be worth it? Will the video recording be good enough to serve the purpose? For handling those indoor photos - are the less expensive models just as good?

I am open to other brands, it just seems like these are pretty good choices for entry dslr. Oh, and I don't like things that are toooo complicated. I have always been a point and shoot kinda person.

Thanks so much for your help!

Dislikes
- Time between pictures is slow
- Time to load pictures while viewing is slow
- 640x480 movies are too small
- 4xAA batteries
- Small LCD
- Low light images are blurry and poor quality
- Flash over saturates images

Looking for
- Larger LCD
- Ability to take pictures faster
- Ability to take higher resolution pictures
- 2xAA batteries
- Fast load times while viewing pictures

Not sure how much I want to spend yet but anywhere from $150 - 250 probably.

I need something that takes really decent pictures, but that I can leave in my car or bag and just pop some batteries into it when I forget my main camera at home or it is charging.

Anyone know of ones that are still being made? I will mostly use it for snapshots of people, inside and out... but also some light scenery.

Thanks in advance!

I've taken so many pics of my son and of nature and soon he'll be playing basketball and I'll take lots of pictures. But the one thing I wanted it for was my astrophotography and even without a telescope I am pleased with my starfields. Here is my latest that I took.

First off, you will find many that love Pentax, Canon, Nikon, Olympus, etc cameras. To me it really is a personal preference, you can take great...

First off, you will find many that love Pentax, Canon, Nikon, Olympus, etc cameras. To me it really is a personal preference, you can take great photos with a lot of different cameras. My recommendation is to:

1. Find the camera you like based on the look, feel, quality, and options that will meet your needs. It seems many have a camera company favorite and then once they have 1 or 2 of that company's camera's, they venture out and try some other company's equipment as they get deeper into the art of photography. Me personally, I love Nikon. I like the way they look, the quality of the cameras, and the continued development that they put into their cameras. I also don't like going with Canon since it's the most popular. I prefer going with a smaller company. Nothing wrong with Canon, but it's just a feel thing.

2. If this is your first digital SLR or if your not a serious photographer yet, find the camera that will meet your needs, not wants. I needed a camera that took great photos as well as some of the higher end cameras, but at a lower cost. I am a landscape, family shooting photographer, and I don't like to spend hours with software changing things later on, though I do touch up photos later. Spend time to read many reviews from many sources. You will see some common themes and some different personal opinions about other things.

3. Price: You can always get a better camera just by paying more money for the higher end model. My mode of thinking is to spend a little more than you want to so you won't be thinking a year later, I wish I bought the other camera. It is hard to choose a camera that may not be higher end when so many great photographers with years of experience will lean you towards something different that you may not be familar with.

4. I am one that do not believe it's best to jump and get a high end camera like a Canon 5D Mk II with little experience with photography. Learn on a camera that will offer you enough flexibility and will help take great shots with the situations you will shoot with.

I had a Nikon Coolpix 5700 and wanted to jump into a SLR camera, but with not paying a lot. I looked at the D40 when it came out and was very pleased with the reviews, it's cost, and quality of photos it took. Several months later they came out with the D40x with more mega pic's. While saving my money for it, the D60 came out with some more improvements, and I was ready to pull the trigger on that camera. Then came the D5000. It's more of a camera than I was looking for especially with the same sensor and other things the D90 had.

By the time I wanted the D5000, I looked closely at it's competition making sure that I was not just sticking with Nikon blindly. The Canon Rebel T1i is another camera that is very impressive and I know I would be equally in many ways just as happy with that camera. Panasonic also has an interesting camera.

5. You need to hold these cameras in your hands. Don't just rely on reviews. Holding a camera and seeing it's work flow and menus is very imporant.

6. Crunch time: It's your money, you need to buy what you like, what is comfortable and will help get the great shots you want....at the same time in your price range. I did not want to spend over $1,000 for a camera, especially since I needed a good flash, memory card, batteries, bag and want more than one lens to work with. The D90 is a better camera than the D5000, but with a lot of it's guts in the D5000 and reviews saying that the quality of photos is the same in many situations, I decided on the D5000 with the 18-55, & 55-200 lens. Yes the view finder is smaller, yes the lcd is smaller, yes it does not have a motor in the body of the camera so I will maybe only have 30 lens's to choose from in the future. But compared to the screen of my 5700 that I shot with previously, the D5000 is a smoking camera. As long as you are ok with the limitations of the camera, your good to go. Even with all these known items, the camera feels great in my hands, it allows me to take great photos, with two lens's and staying under $1,000 I can afford to get the other things I want as well. I am sure if I was thinking about the D90, I would say well the D300s has all these features which the 90 does not....and m a y b e if I push my budget....:p

After taking over 500 shots with my camera, I am convinced I made the right choice. After learning more about WB, ISA, and knowing what controls to use for what situation, I may want a D300s or D700 in the future. By the time you develop your skills, you will appreciate, understand, and be able to use the features of the higher end cameras more effectivly. :o

I use a Canon Rebel XTi most of the time, but like to have a P&S for those times I do not want to lug around a full dSLR.

I'm replacing my Canon Powershot A80, which has served me well, but is at this point outdated.

Two P&Ss I'm looking at are the Lumix DMC-ZS3 and the Canon PowerShot SX200 IS. They seem pretty close in terms of specs, but the biggest problem I have with either one of them is from an ergonomics standpoint: Unlike my A80, there's nothing to really "hold on to"; they are of the dainty and (I think) rather slippery variety.

Here's a good comparison of both of these:

http://www.neutralday.com/panasonic-...om-comparison/

Any alternatives out there that have comparable specs?

I was considering the Canon G11, but I like the zoom on these two (G1 only goes to 140 mm).

Hi

This is my first post here and I was directed to this forum by a friend.

I'm looking to buy a p&s camera. One of the main reasons I'm buy this camera may seem unusual :) - it is to take pictures of my fish in the aquarium and the other reasons are the usual social or outdoor events.

Here are a few I have in mind. I don't know much about cameras and don't know which one would be good for the above situations, but I based it on my budget and the reviews I read.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H20/B

Fujifilm Finepix F70EXR

Canon PowerShot SX120IS

Kodak EasyShare Z950

Kodak Easyshare Z915

Samsung HZ10W

I would appreciate some feedback based on your experience with these cameras. I'm hoping one of these cameras will be able to take good pictures of my fish. I'm also open to suggestion not on the above list, but the same price range.

Thanks

Hi, I'm looking at buying the Canon DS780 (or DS940), and am wondering if any of you have experience with it, and what you think of it's size. My wife is worried that it will be too small and will be clumsy to manage. She held the DS960 and thought it was much more practical to hold and use. The problem is, we were looking at the cameras at Microcenter, where they have the bulky alarm/lock thing attached to it, so it's hard to get a real feel for the camera.

I really like the size, but am not too keen on it's limited optical zoom, but am willing to live with it to get the compactness. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I'm looking to buy my first DSLR and can't decide between the Canon xsi, Nikon d3000 and the Pentax K-X.
I plan on using the camera to take pics of the kids playing ball, and just general pics of the family. I like the speed of the Pentax and I also like that it has antishake in the camera body. Of course I may never by another lens so that may not be a factor. I also like the 11 point focus on the Pentax and Nikon. The video capability doesn't matter to me nor does the 12 mp of the Pentax and Canon. I've been told that the Canon takes the best pictures. Most people say go with the Nikon or Pentax but I would like to get the opinions of some of you guys. Thanks

Heyy guyz...im a 17 year old aspiring photographer...my friends and family tell me my photos with my 6mp cybershot are magazine worthy...ive seriously grown out of the cam and want to get serious...so yeah my birthday gift is pending and my dad wants me to take the plunge and get my first DSLR...Now after some extensive research ive narrowed it down to the Rebel XS and the sony a230 twin lens kit(since theres no difference in image quality in the a300)....Now ive heard the a230 offers great bang for the buck...and the rebel series cams are said to be the top cams in the first dslr range...So which cam do u suggest? please dont offer extra suggestions like ''yo dude i think u shud get the d90 or the xsi''...thats not the answer im looking for....i want a camera for seriously artistic photography...landscapes, macro shots, b and w portraits...image quality is also important...i want high quality images....and i want to know which one of these cams has a better result with the kit lens since i cant get extra lenses right now...il have to wait for a few months. and the image quality should definately be better than the point and shoots in the family.

I'm buying a point and shoot for a gift for someone who shoots lots of flash photos of small children in her work. I looked at the Canon A1100 but discovered it could take 6 seconds between photos, which won't work.

Most Important:
Good photo quality with short lag time between flash photos
Some zoom
Easy to use and good auto feature
Compact but not ultra compact
Budget: $150-275

I've read lots of reviews which have mostly left me confused.
Thanks for your help!

I had one of the first Rebels as well as the Canon SD780 and I'm looking for something in between. I am not a professional but I do take photos of weddings and parties, etc for some friends and family. I sometimes take photos for portraits for friends and family as well. I also love to take landscape photos as well as city night scenes. I was considering the new Rebel T1i but not sure I really need a DSLR and would love to not have to spend that much.
I think I would like something a little more portable but yet better than just the point and shoot of the SD760. I am very impressed with the G11. Then I saw the reviews on the SX1 IS and heard it was pretty good but don't like the fact it uses AA batteries. I just find that I only take my rebel (which isn't working right now) out maybe 3-4 times a year and use the SD760 more often. But I can't take the weddings and such with the SD780. I even saw the SD980 IS but not sure that is any better for what I want than the SD760 I have.
So with knowing what I'm using it for, in your opinion, which one would you choose?
Even though I made the comment of not wanting to spend so much for the G11, I would if that is the best fit for what I'm looking for.
Thanks for your help and opinions.
