Having picked up a Pentax M42 Adapter, I'm getting ready to try it out with my old screw mount lenses. From what I have read, the slide lever on the lens has to be moved from Auto to Manual. The problem I am having is that this lever does not slide or even budge on any of my lenses. Is there something I am missing or is it possible that after being in the Auto position for 30+ years the levers are "frozen"? Any help, suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Looking for something to replace my kit lens... Mainly debating between the Pentax 16-45/4 and the Sigma 20-40/2.8. (I also thought about the Sigma 28-70/2.8, but really want to keep the wider range available). They can be had for about the same price, so I was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on each. Also, how's the distortion on the 16-45 at the wide end... does it get fishy at all?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Swine flu. . . BAH! -- Avian LBA is the REAL problem

Hi All,

Hi All,

After the FA*300/2.8 cleaned out my LBA fund, I thought I might have finally gained some immunity to LBA -- but alas this is not the case.

For quite a while, I had strongly considered a Sigma EX 100-300 f4 APO (IF), but the consistently high prices (even for used ones) and the fact that I already owned an FA*300/4.5 always kept this "Jones" on the back burner. Then yesterday, I spied an ad on PF Marketplace for one @ $550. The seller stated that with his bodies, the lens BF'd at 50-75 feet to the point that the AF adjust could not correct. My first thought was that this wasn't a problem for me since I did most of my long lens shooting at less than 30 feet, and I'd probably use this lens with the 1.7x AFA, and it's had a history of resolving AF problems with other lenses. . . -- and then. . .

. . . Scott's LBA Devil :demon3: immediately appeared, PM'd the seller, committed to buying the lens, and asked for the sellers's Paypal email addy. The rest of the day is something of a fog -- there are a few momentary memories of logging on to Paypal, and copying and pasting an email address, but otherwise the whole day is a blur. . .but I slept well. . .

Then today, I see a Paypal notification email, and it says that my lens has been shipped!

I called the CDC (Center for Disease Control), and they laughed, stating that there was no vaccine, no treatment, and no cure -- and, in fact, there was no LBA -- and then they hung up. I called the White House, and they laughed, and said that consumer spending helped the economic recovery, and that LBA was a " vast Light-Wing conspiracy" or something like that. . .and then they hung up. I called the RNC (Republican National Committee for those not in the US), and they asked me what camera I was using -- when I said Pentax, they said they were against all "*-taxes". . . and then they hung up.

Then, I heard something that sounded like a shutter click in my head, and I stopped worrying and started thinking how it should only take a couple of days coming from Philly, and that with the DA 10-17 FE, Sigma 17-70, Sigma 100-300, and P F 1.7x AFA, I could cover 10mm FE to 510mm with quality optics with no gaps. . . and now I needed to look for a new bag to carry this kit. . .and how cool would a chocolate brown Kx with a grey grip look in that bag. . . I_AM_MUCH_HAPPIER_NOW

:demon3:I__have__come__to__the__conclusion__that__ LBA__is__ nothing__to__worry__about. . .:demon3:

Scott (I think. . .) :D

There is 1 FA* 300mm f2.8 available on eBay, but it has a few bumps and the area where it mounts to the camera seems like it has some strange wear. The seller sells a lot of lenses, has perfect feedback and a 7 day return policy. Here is the link with lots of good pics:http://cgi.ebay.com/SMC-PENTAX-FA-30...#ht_500wt_1182

My question for those with experience buying used, big glass: is it worth the $3500 to $3800, or would you recommend holding out for another listing or just going with the Sigma 300mm APO f2.8?

Thanks,

Here's a question for K-x owners who've tried the 18-250mm lens (Pentax or Tamron versions) on the new camera. How does that combination balance out? I sometimes use the 18-250 on my K200D - a great combination for vacations instead of a megazoom point and shoot. I was wondering if the lens might be a bit heavy for the K-x, given that the new camera's kit lenses are particularly light and compact. But if the balance is still good, perhaps the new combination will make an even better vacation kit.

Hello,

As some of you know, I am in the market for a replacement for my old and broken K100D. Because I did not buy any extra lenses for it, I haven't yet decided whether I will stick with Pentax or not... thanks to the new Kx, I probably will.

If I do, though, I want to upgrade not just the camera but also the lens. The lenses that I am, for now, considering are the Pentax 16-45 DA, the Sigma 17-70 and the Tamron 17-50. As of now, the Sigma is the most attractive of the bunch due to its extra focal length F2.8 and quasi maco ops... but how does it compare with the other two in terms of sharpness and overall iq? Have some of you had the chance to compare these lenses one after another?

I did try the 17-70 on an older Pentax at a local photo-store a few days ago. What jumped out at me was the slow focus time - but I guess that might have just been the camera... or not. Comments?

Also, are there other lenses in this range that I should be aware of?

- Bpp

PS, there has been talk on this forum of Pentax lens prices going up in recent months. How do the present Pentax lens prices compare with Sony/K-M lens-prices? Sony is the other system that I'm seriously considering.
