Hey Jersey,

You may want to look into a few additional flashes that may work equally well at a lower cost per feature than factory branded Nikon units.

The more expensive of the two is a Promaster item. Promaster is apurchasing group that, in almost allcases, buys into name brandproduct and resells it at a lower price point. The result is that the consumer gets the bells and whistles without the extra dollars attached to them.

The Promaster FTD-7500 DX Flash would be roughly equivelant to the SB800 in overall power. It has a guide number of 138 (iso 100), anda bounce/swivel head. LCD panel on the back has a built-in light and shows modes and functions clearly and accurately. Front curtain, rear curtain, and a mini fill-in flash are all available fuctions. They sell for around $230.00 (locally), a little more than an SB600. The only disadvantage is that they don't utilize Nikon's 'Commander Mode' for wireless flash photography. But the D50 doesn't have Commander Mode, so it might not matter to you.

The second offering is a Sunpak PZ40XIIunit. It has a bounce head, but no swivel, and almost the same range (guide # 130 @ 100 iso). Recycle time is sluggish on the Sunpak when compared to the Promaster (3-10 sec average on the promaster, versus the 8-10 sec average on the Sunpak). It also doesn't have the extra flash functions that are available on the Promaster. Again, both flashes cannot be used with Nikon's commander mode. Locally this unit can be had for 169.99, a difference of nearly sixty bucks under the promaster. The MSRP on the Nikon piece is around $130.00.

You can get a flash that's over two times more powerful and still functions I-TTL (automatically) for only $40.00more than the SB-400. IMHO, since you're notable to use thewirelessNikon modes,I'd go with an aftermarket flash.
