I'm still relatively new to photography. I got back in a few years ago after a couple of decades of being away. I need an external flash for my Canon Digital Rebel XT. I'm currently using an EFS 17-85mm IS USM lens for general use. I will hopefully be getting a EF 70-200mm f4/L USM and EF 50mm f1.8 soon. I do mostly scenic, pet, and "people watching" type of photos. Between the 580EX (or 580EX II) and the 430EX, which do you recomend? Is the 580 worth the extra $100+ dollars?

Thank you for your assistance.

IMO the 580 is ABSOLUTELY worth the extra $100. The extra power and faster recycling times alone are worth the extra $$ - even if you never need the other features the 580 provides. The only issue is the size. So I would suggest you go to a store and handle both flashes. With the small size of your camera you may not like the bulk of the 580. And if you don't like the bulk you may be less inclined to use the flash. But if you are OK with the bulk there is no question it's worth the extra money for the 580.
