Default sunpak 344 d and K20D

Is my old sunpak 344D safe to use on my Pentax K20D. I'm mostly concerned about the trigger voltages. My flash was dedicated for the older Pentax 35mm slrs.

Welcome to the forums. The 344D has a relatively low trigger voltage and should be safe to use on modern digital cameras. You can find some user reported trigger voltages here:

Yes, the Sunpak will probably work on your Pentax K-20. However, there are many more advantages to be gained by a flash such as the Pentax AF 360 FGZ. It will provide all of the advantages of bounce flash, off the camera flash, and full utilization of the PTTL protocol under which your K-20 camera operates.
