Default Lighting deep set eyes

I'll post a photo as soon as I can. But I'll describe the problem first.

I'm shooting outdoors in a shaded area. The colors look great and the boy's clothing has nice pop against the background. So I'm like what I see.

He has deep set eyes. So his eyes are in shadow. He has nice blue eyes and in studio work, where I can use a flash brighten his face, I can get enough light on his face to light his eyes. But outdoors, from a distance, to get enough light on him loses the background, (so what's the point of shooting out doors if it's blown out?).

How do you light up deep set eyes out doors yet keep the color and light balanced so you have a decent photo to look at?

Thanks, as always!

Your choices pretty much boil down to either fill flash, or an assistant with a reflector.
If you can dial in flash compensation separately from exposure comp, that should work. Your subject is physically separated enough from the b/g that flash isn't going to have much effect except on the subject, particularly if the flash has zoom function.
